EXERCISE 14

1. What are the different types of information sources? Compare and contrast.
There are 3 different types of sources of information in general. There are the primary,
secondary, and tertiary sources of information. Primary source is a first hand account of an event or
topic from the person/people that have a direct connection or are directly involved in that event or
happening. Raw and fresh information are what primary sources offer which establish them more
reliable and valid sources. This includes autobiographies, diaries, original compositions, manuscripts,
and the like. Secondary sources are sources that provide interpretations, remarks, summary, or
analyses upon certain primary sources. Textbooks, commentaries, biographies, magazines, and works
of criticisms and interpretations are considered secondary sources of information. Lastly, tertiary
sources are the collection or index of the two latter sources. They give overviews of the original
sources. For this reason, they are barely, if not never, accepted for academic research and other
purposes. These sources include almanac, directories, encyclopedias, indexing and abstracting sources,
etc.

2. Enumerate some examples of Indigenous information sources in the country.

Indigenous information sources are special sources of information chiefly relating to history,
culture, or philosophies of a certain group. Wilson and Stewar (2008) define indigenous media as the
“forms of media expression that are conceptualized, produced, and/or created by indigenous peoples
across the globe”. Examples of these are folklore, folktales, folksongs, folk musics and dances, puppet
chorus, ceremonies, gatherings, etc.

3. What is/are the difference(s) between an archive and a library?

The difference between an archive and a library is that the former refers to a place that
contains and offers, usually, rare, specialized, and unique contents or records that are of importance,
typically, historical and public records. These records are preserved and retained for long-term value,
and mostly, these records are unpublished. On the other hand, the latter, as most of us know, simply
contains a collection of books, various learning and reading materials. According to what we have
studied, there can be some overlap with these two terms. There are archives that may be a part of a
library, or an archive that can have the word library in its name.

4. Where else can you find information aside from the library, internet, and indigenous media?
Information is everywhere; they are all around us, if we just open our eyes. Humans, ourselves,
embodying personal experiences and accumulated knowledge and intelligence, are sources of
information.

5. What is the relevance of studying the various types of media and information sources?
Studying the various type of media and information sources is highly relevant and imperative,
especially to our time where media come in a wide range, and information overload is apparent.
Delving deep into those things will make us comprehend more what kind of information and messages
we are receiving and how these information and messages are delivered. By having a sophisticated
literacy about these, we will enable ourselves to better evaluate various information around us, taking
into account where or whom these information came from, how they are being conveyed, and how
we could use them. It makes us a wiser receiver of information and a more learned provider of it.
