M.O.S.-FOR BORED MICROPILING WORKS AT 60 TUAS SOUTH AVE 9 16.12.

2019

1. INTRODUCTION

This method of statement is introduced for drilling and installation of micropiles for the TPG-SITE
3 (LAND) - Construction of Seawater Supply Facilities & Conversion of Fuel Oil Storage
No.3 to Store Renewable Diesel. The micropiling works is to be carried out by Siong Kee Piling
Construction Pte Ltd.

1.1 DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

Bored cast-in-situ micropiles have been chosen as the foundation to support column load for the
above project. The allowable axial load carrying capacity and all structural requirements are
documented in project’s specifications and construction drawings.

The micropiles to be installed in this project are designed for 250/300mm diameter and the
length of 34m below the Ground Level (GL) respectively.

Micropiles are designed as composite structural members, in which both the steel reinforcement
and grout contribute to its structural capacity. Therefore, the types and sizes of steel
reinforcement used will directly affect the load carrying capacity of micropiles.

Micropiles are designed to have 34m below the GL to meet the geotechnical criteria, which will be
verified later by load tests. Table 1.1, 1.2 shows the design details and reinforcement requirement
of the micro piles.

2.0 BORED CAST-IN-SITU MICROPILES

2.1 DRILLING AND INSTALLATION OF MICROPILE

The micropile positions are surveyed and marked on the ground using pegs by a surveyor.

Drilling of the micropile will be carried out using a crawler mounted drill rig. The drill rig is first set
over the pile peg position and its mast is checked for verticality by using a spirit level. The
machine shall be set up on steel plate laid over leveled stable ground.

If loose / soft soil layers are expected, temporary steel casing will be installed first to a depth of
competent soil strata. Drilling will then commence and steel casing will be extended if soil tends to
collapse into the bored hole. (Figure 1)

Either air or water will be used as a flushing medium to assist in advancing the hole and for
removing drilled spoils. Either tri cone bit or drag bit is used for drilling depending on the
consistency of the subsoil layers. If any limestone cavities encountered, special grouting
techniques will be used to seal the cavities. If bedrock is encountered, down-the-hole hammer
may be used.

When the designed penetration depth for the micropile is reached, the bored hole is flushed
thoroughly by either air or water before the depth is being inspected and measured. (Figure 2)

Upon completion of inspection and measurement of the bored hole depth, the steel reinforcement
cages in maximum 6.0 m length with attached tremie grouting tube are then installed into the
bored hole. The installation process will be carried out with either a crane or manually. (Figure 3)

The steel reinforcement bars are pre-fabricated on site before installation into the bored hole.
They are connected at the joint by means of splice couplers. The spiral link is then coiled around
the required section of the reinforcement bars.

After completion of the installation of reinforcement bars, grouting of the bored hole will be
carried out through the tremie grouting tube until neat and consistent cement grout flows out
from the bored hole. (Figure 4)

The temporary steel casing will be withdrawn in stages while grouting the bored hole. However,
the casing toes will always the kept below the grout level in the bored hole during the grouting
and withdrawal process. (Figure 5)

2.2 ALTERNATIVE METHOD OF DRILLING OF MICROPILE USING CONTINUOUS FLIGHT

AUGERING SYSTEM

This technique of drilling is applicable in situation where the inflow of ground water into the bored
hole is minimum and the soil strata are relatively dry and stiff.

Drilling of the micropile will be carried out using a crawler crane mounted drill rig. The drill rig is
first set over the pile peg position and its mast is checked for verticality by using spirit level. The
machine shall be set up on steel plate laid over leveled stable ground.

Instead of conventional drill rods, continuous flight augers are used (Figure 6). Either tri cone
roller bit or drag bit is used for drilling depending on the consistency of the subsoil layers.

As the flight augers and drill bit advance into the soil strata, drill spoils will be delivered upwards
by means of the rotating action of the flight augers.

When the designed penetration depth of the micropile is reached, the flight auger with the drill bit
will be withdrawn before the depth is being inspected and measured.

Upon completion of inspection and measurement of the bored hole depth, the steel reinforcement
cages in maximum 6.0m length with attached tremie grouting tube are then installed into the
bored hole. The installation process will be carried out with either a crane or manually.

The steel reinforcement bars are prefabricated on site before installation into the bored hole. They
are connected at the joint by means of spliced couplers. The spiral link is then coiled around the
required section of the reinforcement bars.

After completion of the installation of reinforcement bars, grouting of the bored hole will be
carried out through the tremie grouting tube until neat and consistent grout flows out from the
bored hole.
