PCA-Ethical Communities Worksheet

Worksheet Objectives:
1. Describe the four ethical communities
2. Apply the ethical communities to your personal case situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Briefly restate your situation from Module 1 and your role.

The One Dream Team, a local non-profit organization has been around for six years now.
The original team of volunteers has seemed to lose their momentum. Each year there is less
participation than the last with fundraising activities to get money for the annual Unity Walk
and activities. The owner of the non-profit, Kerry is not sure what caused the lack of moral
and if she should let them go and find replacement volunteers that will bring more initiative.

My role is the organization is handling all the social media accounts. I post about the walk
and promote the Non-profit through networking. We don’t have formal titles with the
organization being so small, but I would equate my role to be being a social media
coordinator.

2) Describe how the ethics of the organization influenced the situation.

The ethics of the One Dream Team were built on social injustices that have been affecting
the lives of minorities over the centuries. Kerry saw the injustices in the world and her
concerns began to rise even higher with the start of the police brutality cases began to rise
across the United States. This has been happening for years, but it recently came to light after
technology allowed these injustices to be recorded and shared with the world. Kerry wanted
to create The One Dream Team to UNITE the community and local law enforcement.

The goal of bringing these two parties together was to build relationships and hopefully
prevent rising tensions between the two parties. The volunteers that joined the One Dream,
Team shared the same sense of values and beliefs when it comes to what was happening in
the world. “Every organization needs to evolve for itself a prefund sense of its own ethical
spiritual core” (Bolman & Deal, 2021).

3) Recommend how you would apply one of the ethical communities for an alternative
course of action regarding your case.

1
The ethical community I would apply would be the jungle. The Jungle is a community
charged with justice and power. I would use this community to support the reasoning for
the One Dream Team and the walk with the legalities that supported it. With politics
being present and having a very big impact in this community I do think this would
decrease the number of participants that come out to the annual walk. As it is the police
shootings and brutality became a game of politics.

There would be a loss of following but this could bring in more individuals that agree and
want to make a more powerful impact on the community. Taking the time to showcase
the injustices and the power that keeps them in place. Perhaps this was the reasoning for
the decrease in morale from the current volunteers, tensions became too high when the
Black Lives Matter protests began.

4) Reflect on what you would do or not do differently given what you have learned
about ethics.

I’ve done a great deal of research around ethics and making ethical choices as a leader
from pervious courses at Arizona State University. For my own personal values and
beliefs, I always try to make the best decision and be the best person that I can be for
myself. I stand by my morals that we are all humans, and we all deserve to be treated
with respect regardless of the color of our skin, ethnic background, who we choose to
date etc.

I think Kerry did a great job of showcasing her values and beliefs as being the foundation
of the One Dream Team. If I were to make any changes, I would highlight the base
values and beliefs of the organization and create a mission statement and put that on the
annual unity walk shirts. This would make it easier for those who are unaware of the One
Dream Team and what they do become aware. I believe this would help with growth for
the organization as well.
