COMPRESSORS (API 672) Rev 0 1999
1.0 SCOPE OF SPECIFICATION

1.1 Introduction

1.1.1 This specification applies to packaged integrally geared centrifugal air compressors used in
refinery service and is based on, and must be read with, API Standard 672 "Integrally Geared
Centrifugal Air Compressors for Petroleum, Chemical and Gas Industry Services". The
compressors will normally be used in instrument or plant air service where they will be spared.
The specification, however, may also be used for larger capacity unspared process air
applications and other non hazardous non toxic gas services.

1.1.2 This specification applies to equipment for refineries, onshore oil and gas installations and
processing facilities including items purchased either directly or as part of a package.

1.1.3 This specification gives the minimum requirements for the design, fabrication, inspection, testing,
documentation and preparation for shipment for integrally geared centrifugal air compressors.
Also included are related lubricating systems, controls, instrumentation and other auxiliary
equipment.

1.1.4 The compressor(s) shall be fully packaged as skid mounted self contained unit(s) with driver(s)
and auxiliary equipment, coolers, interconnecting piping, instrumentation and controls. The
package(s) shall be complete requiring only the provision of the Owners energy and utility
resources, as given on the equipment Data Sheets, to safely and reliably attain the design
performance.

1.1.5 This specification does not cover the provision of any equipment outside the air compression
package. Downstream air dryers and receiver are not included but are covered in GES U.23.

1.1.6 The Vendor/Contractor shall comply fully with the provisions laid down in this specification.
Any exception must be authorised in writing by the Owner.

1.1.7 In the event of any conflict between this specification and the Data Sheets, or with any of the
applicable codes and standards, the Vendor/Contractor shall inform the Owner in writing, and
receive written clarification from the Owner before proceeding with the work. As a general
principle, the most stringent specification shall apply.

1.1.8 This General Engineering Specification will form part of the Purchase Order/Contract.

SECTION 2 - BASIC DESIGN

2.1 General

2.1.1 Add:

Integrally Geared Centrifugal Compressors shall be supplied only by

Vendors/Contractors qualified by experience in manufacturing the units
proposed. To qualify, the Vendor/Contractor must have manufactured at the
proposed point of manufacture, at least two compressor packages of comparable
power, speed and discharge pressure. These compressors must have been in
service for at least one year and be performing satisfactorily".

The package shall be designed and constructed for unattended continuous, safe
reliable operation at all the specified operating conditions and shall include the
listed equipment plus all interconnecting air piping. The operating conditions
for the compressor shall be specified on the Data Sheets by the Owner.

2.1.4* GES A.04 shall apply. The sound pressure level for the complete package
including driver, measured at 3.3 feet (1.0 metre) from the surface of the
equipment shall not exceed 85 dB(A), assuming there is no background noise. It
is expected that special noise abatement treatment will be required. The
Vendor/Contractor shall submit anticipated and guaranteed overall maximum
noise data for inlet filter, blow off valve/silencer, and the main package skid
with his proposal. The Vendor/Contractor also ensure any acoustic treatment
does not interfere with access to the equipment for maintenance.

2.1.6 Delete the second sentence and replace with:

The equipment shall be packaged and all parts pre-piped to the compressor. The
piping shall comply with GES P.01 and GES P.02 except for standard
components within a manufacturer's standard packaged product range.
