1.0 SCOPE OF SPECIFICATION

1.1 Introduction

1.1.1 This specification covers the general requirements for design, fabrication, inspection, and testing,
for screw conveyors and feeders.

1.1.2 This specification applies to equipment for refineries and petrochemical processing facilities
including items purchased either directly or as a part of a package.

1.1.3 This specification does not cover the conveyors which transport materials that do not behave as
solids, in addition it does not cover the mobile type of screw conveyors.

1.1.4 The Vendor/Contractor shall comply fully with the provisions laid down in this specification. Any
exception must be authorised in writing by the Owner.

1.1.5 In the event of any conflict between this specification and the Data Sheets, or with any of the
applicable Codes and Standards, the Vendor/Contractor shall inform the Owner in writing, and
receive written clarification from the Owner before proceeding with the work.

1.1.6 This General Engineering Specification will form part of the Purchase Order/Contract.

1.2 Other NOC Specifications

Where indicated in this specification, the following additional NOC Specifications shall apply and
any exceptions shall be approved in advance by the Owner.

The Vendor/Contractor shall ensure that all sub-vendors comply with the relevant sections of the
above specifications.

1.3 Data Sheets

The technical data supplied by the Owner for the equipment is given on the Data Sheets which are
included at the end of this specification. The Vendor/Contractor shall complete the Data Sheets
with the remaining information. Prior to shipment, the Vendor/Contractor shall submit a complete
set of "As-Built" Data Sheets.

2.0 DEFINITIONS

The technical terms used in this specification are as defined in :

ANSI/CEMA Std.102 Conveyor Terms and Definitions

2.2 Contractual

The commercial terms used in this specification are defined as follows:

Owner

The oil and gas company, an associate or subsidiary, who is the end user of the equipment and
facilities.

Vendor

The company supplying the equipment and material.

Contractor

The main contractor for a defined piece of work.

Sub-Contractor

A company awarded a contract by the Contractor to do part of the work awarded to the Contractor.

Inspection Authority

The organisation representing the Owner or Vendor/Contractor that verifies that the equipment
have been designed, constructed, inspected and tested in accordance with the requirements of this
specification and the Purchase Order/Contract.

Inspector

A qualified individual representing the Owner, Vendor/Contractor or assigned Inspection


Authority, who verifies that the equipment and facilities have been designed, constructed,
inspected and tested in accordance with the requirements of this specification and the Purchase
Order/Contract.

3.0 DESIGN

3.1 Codes and Standards

3.1.1 The design shall comply with this specification and the following Codes and Standards:

BS 4409 : Part 1 Screw Conveyors - Fixed Trough Type

BS 5667 : Part 1 Continuous Mechanical Handling Equipment-Safety Requirements - General

3.1.2 Unless specified otherwise in the Purchase Order/Contract, the current editions of the codes and
standards at the time of the order should be used.

3.1.3 Equivalent American Standards may be used with the prior approval of the Owner.

3.2 General Requirements

3.2.1 The Vendor/Contractor shall furnish all appliances or accessories of a minor nature that are
necessary or incidental to the proper installation of the screw conveyors and screw feeders even
though these are not detailed on the drawings, called for in the specification, or shown on the Data
Sheets.

3.2.2 All conveyor components shall be capable of continuous duty, 24 hours per day, with minimum
uninterrupted service of one year.

3.2.3 All conveyor components shall be capable of a minimum of three stops and restarts per hour under
full load.

3.2.4 All equipment specified for unsheltered outdoor installation shall be suitable for the climatic zone
specified.

3.2.5 All conveyor rotating components shall be protected from water ingress during plant operation,
shutdown, washdown etc. Outdoor equipment shall be similarly protected for exposure to weather
conditions in the region.

3.2.6 All grease lubrication fittings shall be positioned to be accessible for manual wiping to remove
excess material.

3.2.7 Grease fitting types, proposed to be used on the conveyors, will be specified by the
Vendor/Contractor and submitted to the Owner for review and approval.

3.2.8 Shaft seals used in conveyor components shall be of the combination labyrinth and lip, or
labyrinth and labyrinth types, generally known as "taconite" seals. They shall be grease purged.
Shaft seal designs shall be rated for the "L10" life rating of the associated bearings.

3.2.9 All conveyor sections are to be assembled to their adjacent sections, match marked and tagged. All
drives shall be mounted to their respective sections, aligned, test run and match marked. After
assembly, units shall only be disassembled to the point that is practical for shipment.

3.2.10 The Vendor/Contractor shall design his product to use standard size bearings, bolts, components,
etc. to minimize spare parts requirements.

3.2.11 The equipment shall be of sufficient strength and rigidity for normal handling. Permanent braces,
struts, and lifting lugs shall be shop installed to permit handling at the site with conventional
hooks or slings without damage to the equipment.

3.2.12 Conveyor structure shall be designed and fabricated in accordance with GES S.01.

3.2.13 Conveyor loading shall consider material spillage and build-up on feeders, hoppers and walkways.

3.2.14 Foundations, if required, shall be designed in accordance with ACI 318, by others.

3.3 Screw Conveyors

3.3.1 Screw conveyors enclosures shall be ANSI/CEMA No. 350 Class III E for indoor or sheltered
service, and Class IV E for outdoor applications. Enclosures shall be designed to allow access
over the entire length of the conveyor.

3.3.2 Outboard bearing ends with pillow block bearings are required. Flush type bearings are not
acceptable.

3.3.3 Trough end seals shall be packed gland type. Positive lubrication shall be provided to all
individual bearings from a central location.

3.3.4 Screw conveyors shall be sized based on a trough loading of no greater than 30% of trough
volume with the specified lowest material bulk density, shown on the Data Sheets.

3.3.5 The use of intermediate bearings shall be reviewed by the Owner.

3.3.6 The design and dimensional requirements for fixed trough type screw conveyors, constructed of
carbon steel and stainless steel in sizes from 4 in (100 mm) to 50 in (1250 mm) nominal diameter
shall comply with BS 4409 (Part 1), or equal.

3.3.7 The dimensions of troughs and helical screws, requirements for shafts and drive shaft ends, extent
of guarding, requirements for drives and power provisions and nameplate markings shall comply
with BS 4409 (Part 1), or equal.

3.3.8 Screw conveyor casings may be "U" trough or circular with provision for clean-out doors. The
casings may be split or incorporate drop bottoms for greater access.

3.3.9 Helical screws shall be selected from standard full blade and ribbon or paddles and/or crescent
arrangements with standard, taper or graduated pitches.

3.3.10 Covers shall be bolted, hinged or toggle clamped to offer dust, weather and vapour protection.

3.3.11 Drives shall be either fixed or variable speed, direct or chain driven with suitable drive mountings
as per the Data Sheets.

3.4 Screw Feeders

3.4.1 Screw feeder enclosures shall be ANSI/CEMA No. 350 Class III E for indoor service and Class
IV E for outdoor applications. Enclosures shall be designed to allow access over the entire length
of the feeder. As an alternative design BS4409 (Part 1) may be considered.

3.4.2 Outboard bearing ends with pillow block bearings are required. Flush type bearing ends are not
acceptable. Positive lubrication shall be provided to all individual bearings from a central
location.

3.4.3 Trough end seals shall be packed gland type.

3.4.4 Screw feeders shall be sized based on 95% of trough volume with the specified lowest material
bulk density, shown on the Data Sheets.

3.4.5 Screws for feeders shall be tapered diameter or variable pitch of constant diameter to draw
material uniformly across the length of the feed opening.

3.4.6 The body section of the screw feeders casing, may be designed by the Vendor/Contractor,
depending on the size and loading, these options shall be submitted to the Owner for approval.

(a) a horizontal oval shaped casing for multi screw feeder incorporating a vertical walled
inlet, a flanged connection point for a supplementary hopper and feet for fixing to a main
platform. The inlet/outlet position may be variable for variety of interface requirements.

(b) a horizontal circular casing for massflow with a plan feed out neck, incorporating a steep
wall inlet converging from a flanged connection for the supplementary hopper, and feet
for fixing to the main mounting platform.

(c) a horizontal double "U" body, with vertical hopper walls and flanged inlet over a second
"U" screw feed casing, for an agitated type screw feeder.

3.4.7 The coreless screw or solid shaft screw auger shall be of a form to secure uniform product at the
infeed point, or from the hopper and shall be fitted directly to the geared motor unit shaft.

3.4.8 For a multiscrew or massflo feeder, the mounting platform shall include a formed channel
baseplate acting as a support for both the feeder body and the in-line drive carriage. The whole
drive assembly shall retract, on release of screw or toggle clamps to expose the full screw lengths.

3.4.9 The geared motor drive for multiscrew or massflo feeder shall be suitable for use with a controller
capable of a speed variation over a range of 20:1. The controller shall either be supplied loose or
mounted on the feeder inlet flange. The motor shall comply with the requirements of GES L.11 or
GES L.12 according to the rating.

3.4.10 For an agitated type screw feeder, the agitator shall be a standard "Z" blade bolted on to a drive
shaft for easy cleaning with the shaft directly fitted to the gear motor unit. The drive mounting
platform shall be an integral part of the drive and assembly offering location fixing points and
drive support.

3.4.11 The helical screw and the agitator shall have independent geared motor drives in a compact
arrangement. Both shafts shall be sealed with air purged gland seals. An optional pneumatic seal
valve will be offered.

3.5 Electrical Design

3.5.1 Enclosures for electrical equipment shall be suitable for the specified area classification and
environmental exposure.

3.5.2 Electrical equipment shall be watertight where hosing down is expected.

3.5.3 A selector switch shall be located in sight of and near each drive motor controlled by a remote or
automatic device. The switch shall have at least 3 positions:

REMOTE/AUTO.OFF.LOCAL/START. The switch shall provide the following operations:

(a) REMOTE/AUTO. Maintained position in which motor is started and stopped by the
remote or automatic device.

(b) OFF. Maintained position in which motor is stopped and cannot be restarted
automatically or manually.

(c) LOCAL/START. Momentary position which motor starts with spring return to the
REMOTE/AUTO position.

3.5.4 The selector switch shall have provision for padlocking in the OFF position.

4.0 MATERIALS

4.1 General Requirements

4.1.1 Materials for construction will be to ASTM standard as per CEMA 350 for the screw conveyors
and feeders.

4.1.2 All materials used shall be most suitable for the duty concerned, and shall be new and of first class
commercial quality.

4.1.3 As an alternative materials and components used in the construction of screw conveyors and
feeders shall be as per BS 4409 (Part 1), or equal.

5.0 FABRICATION/ASSEMBLY

5.1 Fabrication

All components shall be fabricated to the highest standards. Should any item be found to be
defective the manufacturer shall be responsible for all costs associated with the replacement of
these parts.

5.2 Assembly

5.2.1 As specified, conveyor sections shall be assembled in the Vendor/Contractor's shop for checks of
fit-up of components and verification of design dimensions and tolerances. Such checks shall
include (but are not limited to):

(a) for pulleys - off-set, elevation, and perpendicularity alignment;

(b) for support structures - alignment (straightness and transverse level);

(c) for drive couplings - shaft alignment of drivers, power transmission, and driven pulleys.

5.3 Welding

5.3.1 Welding shall be examined for compliance with applicable welding procedures and specifications,
which shall be submitted to the Owner before commencement of manufacture, for review and
approval.

5.4 Nameplates

5.4.1 A stainless steel nameplate shall be securely attached at an easily accessible point on the
equipment, with the following information:

- manufacturer's name;
- order number;
- equipment tag number;
- equipment model number;
- equipment rating;
- equipment serial number;
- equipment speed in rpm;
- year of manufacture.

All names plates shall be in the English language.

Rotation arrows indicating direction of rotation shall be attached to the engine or motor casing.

6.0 INSPECTION

6.1 Procedures

6.1.1 The inspection requirements are covered by the Purchase Order/Contract. Additional
requirements are given below.

6.1.2 The Vendor/Contractor shall allow the Inspector free access to all areas of manufacture,
fabrication, assembly and testing.

6.1.3 The Vendor/Contractor always has the responsibility to provide adequate quality control and
inspection of equipment and materials. Any inspection by Owner or his Inspector shall not relieve
the Vendor/Contractor of these responsibilities or those under his guarantees.

6.1.4 All inspection requirements, shall be in the Quality Control Plan and shall be submitted to the
Owner before commencement of manufacture for review and approval. The Quality Control Plan
shall be co-ordinated with, and shall include, the Quality Control Plan of major sub-vendors. The
Vendor/Contractor shall submit procedures for all applicable NDT techniques for approval by the
Owner before production commences.

6.1.5 All operators of NDT equipment shall have thorough knowledge of the operation of the equipment
to be used and shall hold an appropriate certificate of competence, which is to be agreed by the
Owner.

6.2 Scope

6.2.1 The inspection scope shall include, but not be limited by, the following list:

- check of the completeness of all technical documentation including instruction and


erection manuals;

- check of the completeness of the supply, in compliance with the technical specifications;

- dimensional tests of all equipment, in compliance with approved drawings;

- functional tests on all equipment;

- check of the type and thickness of the paint;

- check and inspection of the packing arrangements.

6.2.2 The Vendor/Contractor's Quality Control Plan shall be submitted with his proposal and shall
specify the parts to be examined and the type of examination to be carried out. The proposed
Quality Control Plan is subject to the approval of the Owner who will also indicate those
examinations he intends to witness or observe.

7.0 TESTING

7.1 Statutory (or Required) Tests

7.1.1 The following tests shall be performed by the Vendor/Contractor at his works:

(a) NDT on major components;

(b) overspeed tests;

(c) mechanical run test.

7.1.2 The following tests shall be performed on site after erection:

- check that all equipment is electrically grounded;

- test safety devices;

- carry out load tests;

- carry out load tests, with measurement of vibration noise and dust levels.

7.2 Test Procedures

7.2.1 The Vendor/Contractor shall submit his test procedures in writing to the Owner for approval prior
to the start of the testing programme.

7.2.2 Testing shall be carried out in accordance with the appropriate section of CEMA 350 for screw
conveyors and feeders.

7.3 Test Certificates

7.3.1 The following test certificates shall be provided:

(a) A record of shop test data (which the Vendor/Contractor shall maintain for at least 5
years after the date of shipment). The Vendor/Contractor shall supply certified copies of
test data to the Owner before shipment.

7.4 Performance Test

When required by the Purchase Order/Contract, the Vendor/Contractor shall carry out a
performance test on the equipment at site.

7.5 Start-up

7.5.1 When stated in the Purchase Order/Contract, the Vendor/Contractor shall be responsible for
complete start-up until unit is accepted as operational by the Owner. In this case, the
Vendor/Contractor shall be responsible for the supply of a competent serviceman for the duration
of the checking, start-up and run-on period.

7.5.2 When stated by the Purchase Order/Contract, the Vendor/Contractor shall supply for start-up, all
lubricating fluids, including oil, grease and coolants as required by the unit. The
Vendor/Contractor shall recommend the amount and type of lubrication and cooling fluids for
subsequent operation.

8.0 DOCUMENTATION

8.1 Introduction

8.1.1 This section covers the documentation required for the design, selection, fabrication, inspection
and testing for all the equipment, components and services to be provided against this
specification.

8.1.2 The detailed list of documents that are required is included with the Purchase Order/Contract.

8.1.3 The documents as listed may be considered as a minimum requirement; all details to confirm
compliance with the relevant specifications, and to allow a full and continued appraisal to be made
of the Vendor/Contractors proposals and interpretations of the ordered equipment, should be
submitted in accordance with the schedule specified in the Purchase Order/Contract.

8.1.4 Any production or procurement undertaken by the Vendor/Contractor which is prior to the
relevant documentation being submitted and reviewed by the Owner is at the Vendor/Contractor's
risk.

8.1.5 On all documentation the Owner Order number, equipment title, tag number and project name
shall be quoted.

8.1.6 All documentation shall be checked and signed by the checker before submission.

8.2 Schedules and Reports

8.2.1 The Vendor/Contractor shall submit with his tender a preliminary Quality Control Plan.

8.2.2 The Vendor/Contractor shall include with his tender documentation a statement of proposed sub-
vendors, a document submission schedule for all documents based on a review cycle of three
weeks and outline programme for procurement and production activities.

8.2.3 The Vendor/Contractor shall incorporate any revisions agreed with the Owner during the enquiry
review stage and submit revised tender documentation for approval.

8.2.4 Monthly reports shall be submitted by the Vendor/Contractor detailing design, procurement,
production and documentation activities. The format shall be agreed with the Owner.

8.3 Data and Calculations

8.3.1 The Vendor/Contractor shall supply with his tender completed Data Sheets containing all the
relevant information necessary for appraisal of the design by the Owner.

8.3.2 Project specific instructions will be issued to the Vendor/Contractor with the Purchase
Order/Contract, which describes the data and calculations to be submitted, and the methods of
submission.

8.3.3 The Vendor/Contractor shall be responsible for obtaining approvals from the Inspection Authority.

8.3.4 All calculations shall be carried out in a clear and logical manner. Where conditions involve the
use of formulae or methods not specified in the Design Code, the source of these formulae or
methods shall be clearly referenced.

8.3.5 Computer calculations will only be acceptable if all input is shown, together with calculated values
of intermediate terms and factors and options chosen, as well as final calculated dimensions,
stresses or other values and the computer program has been validated to the satisfaction of the
Owner.

8.3.6 Calculations and drawings that are interdependent, i.e. foundation loading and equipment
footprint, shall be presented for appraisal together.

8.4 Drawings

8.4.1 The drawings listed with the Purchase Order/Contract shall be sent by the Vendor/Contractor to
the Owner and/or the Inspection Authority for review and approval.

8.4.2 The components and process to produce the ordered equipment shall be shown in sufficient detail
to be fully appraised eg, plating drawings, shall as a minimum, show the position of all through
thickness welds, together with material thicknesses and specifications, clearly indicating the
welding procedure specification which is applicable to each weld.

8.4.3 General arrangement drawings shall be to scale and show the relative location and main
dimensions of all components including elevations and orientations of nozzles, lifting lugs,
nameplates and supports.

8.4.4 Detail drawings which may be included on the general arrangement drawings shall include
thicknesses and dimensions of all components, weld details, machining and surface finish
requirements, gasket and nameplate details.

8.4.5 As-built drawings may be the general arrangement drawings marked-up with the actual as-built
dimensions.

8.4.6 The Vendor/Contractor shall provide, at an early stage, all of the data required to progress the civil
design of the supporting foundations or structure. This shall include, but not be limited to, the
following:-

- size/weight of equipment;
- location of centre of gravity of equipment, or the actual loads at the support points;
- configuration of supports required;
- any dynamic loading considerations that may be pertinent to the design of the foundations
or supporting structure.

8.4.7 In addition Vendor/Contractor shall submit as a minimum the following data and drawings:

(a) dimensioned outline drawings showing equipment arrangement and elevations;

(b) completed specification sheets giving manufacturer, size, type or model or specific
equipment;

(c) materials of construction;

(d) recommended spare parts for two years continuous operation;

(e) calculations and data as detailed in 8.3.2;

(f) CEMA Material Classification Code used for design;

(g) details and calculations of pulley design;

(h) speed reducer data including torque ratings, service factors, mechanical power
ratings, exact standard and optional gear ratios for all reducers;

(i) the following data for each fluid coupling and variable speed hydraulic drive unit:

- performance curves describing the complete range of output torque versus speed
characteristics of the unit with the corresponding hydraulic oil level or "scoop
tube" position for each curve;

- the particular output torque versus speed curve which will produce the required
rate of acceleration of the driven equipment, indicating the corresponding oil
level of "scoop tube" position.

8.5 Final Records, Documents and Manuals

8.5.1 Two copies of the Data Dossier shall be supplied, and shall be a record of the manufacturing
process. Where stated in the Purchase Order/Contract, it shall contain the following:

- general arrangement drawing and bill of material;


- the Quality Control Plan;
- material certificates;
- chemical analysis certificates;
- positive material identification certificates;
- weld procedures;
- welder qualifications;
- NDT procedures and records;
- heat treatment charts;
- hazardous area certificates;
- balance certificates;
- hydrostatic pressure tests procedures, and test certificate;
- performance test procedures, and test certificate;
- non-conformity records;
- approvals by the Independent Inspection Authority;

- certificate of conformity;
- Owner's Release Certificates.

8.5.2 Six sets of the Installation, Operations and Maintenance Manual (IOM) shall be specifically
compiled for the equipment supplied. A compendium of manufacturer's data for a range of like
products is not acceptable. The IOM shall contain the following:

- a description of the equipment, process and controls philosophy;


- the master document list and certified copies of key drawings;
- packing, shipping and site preservation instructions;
- step by step installation instructions;
- step by step pre-commissioning procedures;
- step by step commissioning procedures;
- normal start up, operating and shutdown procedures;
- step by step procedures for dismantling and re-assembly;
- normal operating and set point values for all instruments;
- routine preventive maintenance schedule and major repair procedures;
- lubrication, chemicals, consumables schedule;
- list of special tools;
- spare parts ordering information;
- for PLCs, a copy of the programme and re-programming procedures.

The IOMs shall be presented in A4 format, and be securely bound in heavy duty 4 ring binders.

8.5.3 The Vendor/Contractor shall produce as built documents revised to indicate field changes.

8.5.4 The Vendor/Contractor shall supply one set of mylar original drawings.

9.0 PRIOR TO SHIPMENT

9.1 Painting

Surface preparation and painting shall be in accordance with GES X.01 and GES X.03 with colour
coding of equipment in accordance with GES X.02.

9.2 Spares

The Vendor/Contractor shall submit with his proposal, a priced list of recommended spare parts
for start-up and two years operation, for review by the Owner.

9.3 Packing and Storage

9.3.1 This section describes the minimum requirement for the preservation and protection of screw
conveyors and screw feeders during the sea and land transportation and storage, prior to
installation.

9.3.2 The probable storage period will be specified in the order/enquiry and will extend from the time of
despatch to the time of unpacking at site. If the storage period is not stated, a minimum period of
24 months shall be assumed.

Unless otherwise specified, a rust preventative shall be applied to unpainted machined surfaces,
and shall be a type which (1) provides protection during shipment and outdoor storage for one
year exposed to a normal industrial environment, and (2) is removable with mineral spirits.

9.3.3 The equipment shall be prepared for export shipment by sea. Shipment as non-containerised deck
cargo is not allowed.

9.3.4 The following preparation for shipment shall be a minimum requirement.

The Vendor/Contractor shall be responsible for loading and anchoring the item(s) to prevent
damage during shipment. This shall be done at the Vendor/Contractor's works, and may be
achieved by firmly fixing the equipment to wooden pallets or crates, as part of an approved
packing procedure.

9.4 Shipping

Detailed shipping arrangements will be given in the Purchase Order/Contract.

The equipment shall not leave the Vendor/Contractor's works for shipment until the release
certificate has been approved by the Owner's Inspector.

9.5 Warranty

9.5.1 The Vendor/Contractor shall provide manufacturer's written guarantees of belt and screw
conveyors performance.

9.5.2 The Vendor/Contractor shall warrant all materials and services supplied against any defect for a
minimum of 12 months after commissioning or 24 months from the date of delivery to site,
whichever is the shorter period, or for the period stipulated in the Purchase Order/Contract.

9.5.3 Should any item be found defective, the vendor shall be responsible for all costs associated with
restoring the equipment to the standard specified by the Purchase Order/Contract.
