Introductory Message
Welcome to the TLE 7/8 Self- Learning Module (SLM) on Selecting Measuring
Instruments!
This learning resource hopes to engage the learner into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also
aims to help learner acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learner on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learner' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learner as they do the tasks included in the module.

At the end of this module you will also find:
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of the
module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer What I Know before moving on to the other activities
included in the module.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.

What I Need to Know
Good day! How are you? Are you now ready for a new learning adventure? This
module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you master
Selecting Measuring Instruments. The scope of this module permits it to be used in
many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse
vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard
sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to
correspond with the textbook you are now using.
After going through this module, you are expected to select measuring
instruments (TLE-IACP7/8MC-Od-1).
What I Know
Good day learner! Do you know that you made the splash of achievement?
That is true, Learner! Completing your past modular lessons means you are very
eager to study more. I am so happy to know that! I know you are all excited to learn
more about this subject. But before proceeding to the next lesson, let us have some
activities in the form of pre-test. This test will help you assess your knowledge on the
lesson that you will be taking soon. Are you ready, learner? You may start with the
pre-test now!
Pre-test
I. Direction: True or False. Read each dos and don’ts of handling measuring
instruments very carefully. Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if it is
wrong. Write your answer in your activity notebook.
_____________1. Do not use the caliper as tongs.
_____________2. Oil the movable parts of the measuring tools such as zigzag rules,
calipers, dividers and compasses every minute to avoid stock-up.
_____________3. Do not pull the steel tape of pull-push rule too much to avoid the
coil spring from damage.
_____________4. Check the lock of a pull-push rule if it is working when it is only
needed.
_____________5. Wipe off edges of the steel tape of pull-push rule with bare hands to
make sure that it is clean.
_____________6. Make sure that grits like sand do get inside the housing or case
of a pull-push rule to avoid wearing-off of the graduations.
4
_____________7. Don’t wipe measuring tools/instruments before returning them to
the storage room.
III. Direction: Multiple Choice. Read and identify what is meant by each
statement. Choose your answer from the given choices and write it in your activity
notebook.

Lesson
Selecting Measuring
1 Instruments
Are you ready for the lesson, learner? Don’t worry, I know you can do it! By
the way, this lesson is focused on the identification of different linear measuring
instrument and understanding the dos and don’ts of handling them. It also aims to
develop know-how on selecting the appropriate measuring instruments to be used.
This lesson provides a lot of activities where you can apply your skills and knowledge.
These activities are designed to help you independently perform the task of checking
the condition of tools and equipment.
What’s In
Activity 1. Direction: Write a simple explanation about what you have learned from
your previous lesson. Write your answer around broken line to form an image. Just
follow the broken line until it ends up to where you begin answering. Start your
explanation on the direction of the arrow. Nail it, Learners!
6
Direction: Understand the meaning of the cartoon. Write at least three learning
insights about the cartoon based on your previous lessons. Write your answers in
your activity notebook.
Learning Insights:
1. _______________________________________________________________________________
2. _______________________________________________________________________________
3. _______________________________________________________________________________

Notes to the Teacher
Congratulations, Learner! You have proven that you really learned a lot in
your previous lesson. This time, you will be harnessed with new skills in determining
the conditions of the materials you might always use in the task given to you. Before
learning how to appropriately select the measuring instruments or tools you will be
needing for your activities, first, you need to determine their specific uses and
functions, and to which instance you can use them. To make it more challenging yet
engaging, let us have a game called Detect and Connect. Get it on, Learner!
So, to start mastering this lesson, let us have an initial activity which can help
you think about the categories of the tools and equipment.

Handling of Measuring Instruments / Tools
Hi, Learner! How were your activities? You did well, learner! This time let us
learn about the dos and don’ts of handling measuring instruments or tools. There
are times we are fond of fixing or creating carpentry works at home. Those times, we
handle various materials in different activities we make like measuring. When
measuring other materials like lumber or steel, we use measuring tools. But, did you
know we must handle these measuring instruments or tools well? We need to handle
it with care to prolong its durability and usefulness. Now, let us learn the dos and
don’ts of handling measuring instruments or tools.
A. DOs
B. DON’Ts
1. Do not wipe off edges of the steel tape of pull-push rule with bare hands to
avoid injury.
2. Do not pull the steel tape of pull-push rule too much to avoid the coil spring
from damage.
3. Do not use the caliper as tongs.
11
What’s More
How was your learning with the dos and don’ts of handling of measuring
instruments or tools? This time, you will learn more concepts about linear measuring
instruments.
Linear measure
Using the linear measuring instruments like ruler, meter stick, and tapes, you
can measure tools such as hammer, screw drivers, plier, and more. The example
below illustrates the placements of the ruler against the hammer to measure its
length.
12
To measure the length, place the object close to the ruler. Make sure that the
one tip of the object is align with ‘0’ where the measurement of the length of an object
begins. Then, mark the ruler where the other tip of the object ends to easily note it.
1. There are nine linear measuring instruments or tools that can be used in
measuring various materials. These linear measuring tools are caliper, compass,
divider, meter stick, protractor, pull-push rule, ruler, try square, and zig zag rule.
2. There are several things to remember on how to take good care of the measuring
instruments. These are the dos and don’ts in handling the linear measuring
tools. Through these guides, we can be able to protect the tools from any misuse
or damage. Thus, we can prolong its usefulness.
3. Measuring Instrument is a device used for measuring the physical quantity.
4. Linear Measurements is a distance between the two given points in an object or
in the material used for carpentry.
5. Measurement the size, length, or dimension of something as established by
measuring.
6. Linear Measure is a measurement of length. An example of linear measure is
using meter stick or stick yard to find out the length of the table.
13
What I Can Do
Let’s see if you have already knowledge about measuring tools. Answer the
activity below. Begin now!
Activity 1: Direction: List down the nine measuring tools on your activity notebook.
1. _______________________ 6. _______________________
2. _______________________ 7. _______________________
3. _______________________ 8. _______________________
4. _______________________
5. _______________________
Activity 2: Direction: Look at the illustration. Using your measuring instrument, try
to measure the length and width of the lumber. You may start now!
Width :______________
Length :______________
Great, Learners! You have proven that you learned a lot. Now, are you ready
for the assessment? I knew it. Get it on, Learners!
