Selecting Measuring Instruments!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by


educators both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or
facilitator in helping the learner meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum
while overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

What I Need to Know

Good day! How are you? Are you now ready for a new learning adventure? This
module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you master
Selecting Measuring Instruments. The scope of this module permits it to be used in
many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse
vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard
sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to
correspond with the textbook you are now using.

After going through this module, you are expected to select measuring
instruments (TLE-IACP7/8MC-Od-1).

That is true, Learner! Completing your past modular lessons means you are very
eager to study more. I am so happy to know that! I know you are all excited to learn
more about this subject. But before proceeding to the next lesson, let us have some

Are you ready for the lesson, learner? Don’t worry, I know you can do it! By
the way, this lesson is focused on the identification of different linear measuring
instrument, and understanding the dos and don’ts of handling them. It also aims
to develop know-how on selecting the appropriate measuring instruments to be
used. This lesson provides a lot of activities where you can apply your skills and
knowledge. These activities are designed to help you independently perform the
task of checking the condition of tools and equipment.

What’s In

In your previous lesson, you performed basic preventive maintenance


particularly in repairing defective tools, and conducting preventive maintenance of
carpentry tools. I know you are ready for the first activity of your new lesson. But
before we proceed to learning new one, let us have some activities to review your
previous topic. For the next activities, let us make a piece of art while recalling the
concepts that we have learned. Also, you will harness your mind through analyzing
and explaining the cartoon editorial on the importance of performing basic
preventive maintenance specifically on the lubrication schedule.

For this lesson, learners might be exposed to the different


materials which can be harmful to handle. Proper guidance of the
teacher is advised. Ensure that the learners wear their protective
gears before bringing them to actual performance using the materials.

determining the conditions of the materials you might always use in the task given
to you. Before learning how to appropriately select the measuring instruments or
tools you will be needing for your activities, first, you need to determine their
specific uses and functions, and to which instance you can use them. To make it

Selecting the measuring instruments or tools is one of the carpentry routines


which requires know-how, initially, in choosing what measuring tools to use in a
specific carpentry work. Through the knowledge and skills you possess, you can
easily perform the activities not only in the creation of projects but also in ensuring
the accuracy of measurements for the dimensions of your output.

Practically, enough know-how on these measuring equipment or tools can


give you some benefits. Some of these benefits are efficiency in the preparations of
materials and accuracy of work. They enable you to successfully produce quality
output in your future ventures in carpentry.

To start mastering this lesson, let us have an initial activity which can help

What Is It

Wow! You have successfully identified the correct linear measuring


instrument/s in Column A that can be appropriately used to measure the materials
given in Column B. This time, you will learn more about the linear measuring
instruments and their uses.

Types of Linear Measuring Tools

1.  Pull-push rule – used for measuring long pieces of stock. 

2. Zig Zag Rule – a folded measuring tool. 

3. Ruler – used for measuring short pieces of stock. 

4. Caliper – used for measuring diameter.  

5. Try Square – used for checking flatness and squareness. 

6. Meter Stick – a measuring device which is up to one


(1) meter in length.

7. Compass – used for scribing arcs and circles.

8. Protractor – used for laying out angles.

Handling of Measuring Instruments / Tools
Hi, Learner! How were your activities? You did well, learner! This time let us
learn about the dos and don’ts of handling measuring instruments or tools. There
are times we are fond of fixing or creating carpentry works at home. Those times,
we handle various materials in different activities we make like measuring. When
measuring other materials like lumber or steel, we use measuring tools. But, did
you know we must handle these measuring instruments or tools well? We need to
handle it with care to prolong its durability and usefulness. Now, let us learn the
dos and don’ts of handling measuring instruments or tools.
            A. DOs 

1. Wipe measuring tools/instruments before returning them to the storage


room.
2. Oil the movable parts of the measuring tools such as zigzag rules, calipers,
dividers and compasses to avoid stock-up.
3. Make sure that grits like sand do not get inside the housing or case of a pull-
push rule to avoid wearing off of the graduations.
4. Check the lock of a pull-push rule if it is working. 

            B. DON’Ts 

1. Do not wipe off edges of the steel tape of pull-push rule with bare hands to
avoid injury.
2. Do not pull the steel tape of pull-push rule too much to avoid the coil spring
from damage.
3. Do not use the caliper as tongs.

Using the linear measuring instruments like ruler, meter stick, and tapes,
you can measure tools such as hammer, screwdrivers, plier, and more. The
example below illustrates the placements of the ruler against the hammer to
measure its length.

To measure the length, place the object close to the ruler. Make sure that the one
tip of the object is align with ‘0’ where the measurement of the length of an object
begins. Then, mark the ruler where the other tip of the object ends to easily note it.

What I Have Learned

1. There are nine linear measuring instruments or tools that can be used in
measuring various materials. These linear measuring tools are caliper,
compass, divider, meter stick, protractor, pull-push rule, ruler, try square, and
zig zag rule.
2. There are several things to remember on how to take good care of the
measuring instruments. These are the dos and don’ts in handling the linear
measuring tools. Through these guides, we can be able to protect the tools from
any mis-use or damage. Thus, we can prolong its usefulness.
3. Measuring Instrument is a device used for measuring the physical quantity.
4. Linear Measurements is a distance between the two given points in an object or
in the material used for carpentry.
