Identifying Equipment for
Staging Formwork Components
Introductory Message
For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the TVL 11 Self-Learning Module (SLM) on Identifying Power Tools

for Staging Formwork Components!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators both
from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping
the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming
their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their
needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

ii
For the Learner:

Welcome to the TVL 11 Self-Learning Module (SLM) on Identifying Equipment for

Staging Formwork Components!

The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often used to
depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create and
accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a learner

Lesson Identifying Equipment

1 for Staging Formwork

Components
This is completely a new whole learning experience for you and a good
opportunity to explore your potentials. This time, we will discover more about the
various equipment we need in our staging formworks for specific tasks that will help
you on the succeeding lessons. Remember, this equipment is actually your treasure.
It makes you a competent and reliable skilled worker. Enjoy learning!

What’s In

How are you? Have you mastered already your previous lessons? Do you want
to accomplish an activity that will measure your stored knowledge about them? Very
Good! Before moving on to the learning activities of this module, let us find out your
mastery on measuring, cutting, and testing tools.

ACTIVITY 1 – TAG ME!

Direction: Classify in which section the following tools/equipment belong. Do this
in your activity notebook.

Congratulations! You’ve got it. Proceed to the next activity. Good luck!

3
Notes to the Teacher
For some, the equipment presented in this lesson are very familiar
but to others these might be a complete ‘stranger’. Just encourage them to
keep studying the said equipment. Upon visit, you might be preparing
pictures or videos on its actual performance. Keep inspiring them.

4
What’s New

Are you still okay? Try this first activity to understand and identify the actual
images of equipment used that must be taken into consideration.

Activity 2 – Match a Mirror Flip!

Direction: Match the images in Column A with Column B by putting an arrow line.

5
What is It

Power tools are designed to make our work easy to accomplish with higher
quality of productivity. However, you need to acquire exact knowledge how they look
like, their descriptions, performance, and other relative information. Let’s start.

Common Equipment for Formwork Components

1. Table Circular Saw (also known

as a saw or bench saw in
England) is a woodworking tool,
consisting of a circular saw
blade, mounted on an arbor,
operated by an electric motor
(either directly, by chain or by
gears). The blade protrudes
through the top of the knife,
providing protection for the
object, usually wood, to be cut.

2. Drill Press, sometimes called

Drilling Machine, is used for the
creation of holes in hard
substances. The drill is held in a
revolving spindle and inserted
into a workpiece, which is
normally clamped in a screw
sitting on a sheet.

6
3. Table Planer is a metal cutting
machine in which the workpiece is
securely fixed to a horizontal table
and travels back and forth under a
single point cutting tool. The tool
holder is placed on a cross-rail so
that the tool can be fed (moved)
around the table in quick, covert,
side-facing gestures at the end of
each table motion.

4. Radial Saw is a cutting mechanism

composed of a circular saw
mounted on a horizontal sliding
frame. The radial arm saw was the
main instrument used to cut long
pieces of stock to fit.

7
5. Bench Grinder is a type of benchtop
grinding machine used to power
abrasive wheels. A pedestal grinder is a
similar or larger version of a grinder that
is mounted on a pedestal that can be
bolted to the floor or can be mounted on
rubber legs. Such types of grinders are
widely used to grind a number of cutting
tools and do other hard grinding.

6. Band Saw is a power saw with a long,

sharp blade consisting of a continuous band
of toothed metal stretched between two or
more wheels to cut material. They are used
principally in woodworking, metalworking,
and lumbering, but may cut a variety of
materials.

Did you enjoy reading? Did you learn the common hand tools, power
tools and equipment necessary to be used in staging formwork components?

8
What’s More

Watch out! Work safely. You have this module to let you understand the value
of handling equipment. Understanding the proper handling of equipment is
important. Reading and understanding what is written in the operations manual is
equally important. Bear in mind that equipment is useful but it also poses danger.

Activity 4: True or False!

Direction: Write True if the statement is correct and False if the statement is wrong
in the blanks provided before each number.

_____________1. Band Saw is a power saw with a long, sharp blade consisting of a
continuous band of toothed metal stretched between two or more
wheels to cut material.

9
What I Have Learned

After determining the different common power tools used on staging formwork
components, let’s determine how much you have learned.

Activity 5 – Use Tools Safely: Agree or Disagree?

Direction: Analyze the statements and put a check ( ) mark in the column of your
answer.

Equipment Safety Practices Disagree Agree

1. Check the nameplate to ensure that the power source is
correct for the tool.
2. Test tools before starting work.
3. Make sure the ground pin is in place and that there are no
cuts in the cord.
4. Test the ground connection on 3 wire system or check that
tool is double insulated.
5. Make sure the switch is operating freely. Keep finger off
switch when carrying a tool.
6. Work where the floor is wet or damp without extreme
precautions.
7. Carry tools up a ladder.
8. Operate grinding wheels at speeds beyond normal rate.
9. Use the cord to pull out plugs or lift tools.
10. Use tools where flammable gases or vapors may be present.
11. Ensure the guards (e.g. saws etc.) are in place and that they
are functioning properly.
12. If brushes are sparking excessively, obtain a replacement
tool.
13. Wear suitable eye and foot protection.
14. When you start, observe proper handling of equipment to
avoid accident
15. Remove adjusting keys/wrenches before turning tool on or
plugging it in.
16. Make improvised repairs.
17. Work on makeshift platforms.
18. Use tools with defective guards.
19. Wear loose clothing or gloves.
20. Tape cords to repair them.

Nice job! Are you ready to apply what you have learned? Enjoy the activities
in store for you.

10
What I Can Do

Since you are now familiar with the names of equipment in selection and
preparation for staging formwork components, you are getting better to becoming a
