Lesson Preparing Tools, Equipment
and Materials for Staking
1 Out Building Lines

Welcome to Module 1! This module will provide you knowledge on how to

prepare tools, equipment and materials for staking out building lines. Enjoy
learning!

What’s In

Hello future skilled carpenters! Welcome to a continuous learning

opportunity. How are you? Are you now prepared for a self-paced learning? Tools,
materials and equipment used in carpentry are not new to you at all because you
have tackled this in your previous years in school especially in TLE. Now, take a
look at your house. Do you have any carpentry tools? Can you name some of them?
Do you know their specific uses? In this lesson, you will have deeper learning on
tools and materials in carpentry basically for staking-out building lines.

Notes to the Teacher

This module contains engaging activities where learners could do
a self-pace learning. Guide the learners to do the learning tasks
in the allotted time. Remind them that the secret of learning is
having fun while loving what they are doing. Remind the parents
as well to monitor their children’s learning using this module.

3
What’s New

This time, you will be harnessed with deeper knowledge on tools, equipment
and materials in staking out building lines. To make this more fun and challenging
try this activity called Find me!

Activity 1: Find me!

Direction: look for the carpentry tools and materials inside the table. Write them in
your activity notebook.

Did you find them all? Good job! Are you familiar with their uses? In this
lesson you will have clear understanding with the specific function of each tool
and material. Read and explore so you will learn more! Good luck!

4
What is It

A wonderful day to you! How are you today? In this lesson your queries in
mind will be aswered. Are you now ready ? Go ahead. It’s time now to fill your
bucket with new knowledge.

TOOLS AND MATERIALS FOR STAKING OUT BUILDING LINES

tools we need in our works. In addition, application on their proper care and
maintenance will give the following advantages: efficiency of the work, quality
speed, accomplishment, and accuracy.

Tools and Materials Description Illustration

. Claw hammer - used for driving and
pulling out nails

Spirit level / Bar level - a tool framed in

aluminium or wood that
is used to test the
horizontal level of the
surface of the material

Cross cut saw - used for cutting lumber

across the grain of wood.

Pull-push rule - flexible strip of metal

provided with scale both
Metric and English
system of measurements,
rolled in a case used for
laying out
measurements.

5
Steel Square or L - L-shaped with one arm
Square forming a perfect right
angle to the other used
to check the squareness
of the corner of a larger
object.

Plumb bob - a cone shaped metal

suspended on a string
and is used to check the
verticalness of post or
column and other.

Try Square - looks like the steel

square and it is use to
check the flatness and
squareness of a small
piece of stock or lumber

Water hose level - used to determine the

horizontal levelness of
batter boards, and parts
of the building such as
beam, floorings and
others

Ripping/ wrecking bar - used to pull out long

nails. This may be
straight or gooseneck. It
has a nail slot for pulling
out spikes and wedging
apart nailed boards.

Nails - made of metal, used to

fasten woods

6
Lumber- - a milled or processed
piece of wood ready for
use.

.Chalk line - used to mark straight

line on a long piece of
stock or lumber.

Bolo - used to cut pegs for

stakeout.

Sledge hammer - used to drive pegs for

stakeout
