Geometric Sequence

It is a sequence in which each item is obtained by multiplying the preceding

term by a constant number called ration (r), where r is obtained from
dividing the term from the previous term.

In finding the nth term

What is the 10th term of the
or ar of a geometric geometric sequence 3, 15, 75, 375,
sequencs with first .......
term and common First Step: Find the common ratio by
ratio r, we have: dividing A sub one to A sub two
.
an = a1 r n-1 r = a/a2
(formula of r =15/3
geometric sequence) r=5
Second Step: Substitute all of the given
terms, then subtract 10 - 1.
an = a1 r (n-1)
Where: an = 3(5)
10-1

an = nth term or last term an = 3(5)

9

a 1 = 1st term
Third Step: raise 5 to the power of 9
r = common ratio an = a1. r (n-1)
n = number of terms an = 3(5)10-1
an = 3(5)9
an = 3(1,953,125)
The pattern of the

First Step: multiply 3 by 1,953,125

previous activity is an = a1 . r (n-1)
"times 2" or double an = 3(5)10-1
the previous number an = 3(5)9
to get the next an = 3(1,953,125)
number. Answer an =5,859,375
