Topic – Theater

There are different types of theaters but there is only one purpose why theater
exists. To bring entertainment to the audience. The theater is commonly associated
with drama and performed on stage or theater establishments. The word theater
derives from the Greek word theatron which means “a place of seeing”. There are
three basic styles of theater. The Presentational styles, Representational style, and
Eclectic style. The first style is when the actors are shameless and act with strong
emotions and feelings during the act. The second is about the illusion created on the
stage and lastly, in simple words, it is the combination of the first two styles that I
mentioned. Functions are mainly to provide entertainment to the audience, with the
help of visuals, audio, and many things to consider. One most important thing in
theater is to touch the audience’s heart and mind. To make them actually part of the
drama without even acting or being part of the cast.
The theater is sometimes boring. I always prefer Cinema to the theater. The
reason why I choose this topic is to challenge my understanding about this topic and
actually involve myself in the topic that I partly dislike. If you ask me about my
perspective, thoughts, and impression the theater is really hard and complicated.
Even before, in my high school days, we were asked to create a theater performance
as part of our final project or presentation, and as I observe theater is hard and there
are a lot of things to consider. From the script, actors or actresses or mainly the
characters, the props, the lighting (when needed) and etc. That’s why I prefer
watching the cinema because I extremely appreciate the work presented in
Cinemas. In addition, I also hate being part of the cast. I am more of an audience
than an actor.
Philippine theater evolves in so many beautiful ways. In pre-colonial times, the
performance being performed is most likely related to gods and goddesses. Nature-
related scenarios and so on. Rituals and performances are related or dedicated to
the deities and elements in the forest. In the Spanish era, the Philippine theater
evolves so widely, during this time, the introduction of Christianity happens. That’s
why theater performance is now most likely in touch with Christianism. Also, the
drama called Zarzuela is well known. Next in American colonialization, there is no
particular influence or changes that happened during this regime. One of the most
important trademarks in Philippine theater during this time is that theater
performances are translated into English. Japanese Occupation, Theater barely
survives. Japanese dislike the idea of theater that’s why they confiscated the things
that involve drama. Now, Philippine theater is so vast and productive. That it can
compete worldwide. The Zarzuelas like "Ang Kiri," "Dalagang Bukid," and "Paglipis
ng Dilim" are now part Of the Philippines’ art history and some regions in the
Philippines still perform this kind of art.
In closing, Theater makes people entertained. People who are engaging in
this kind of performance are talented and well-disciplined. Why? Theater consumes
a lot of effort and time. That’s why I admire people who participate in this kind of
work. Even people who are in front of the stage or people who make efforts behind.
Learning theater makes me somehow connected to Philippine theater history even
though I am not a fan. This gives me knowledge about this kind of particular thing.
The theater is really beautiful, the performance and building itself. That I know soon
or in the future I will also be entertained while watching theater performances or
even acting or being part of the cast.
