Estimation of Potassium permanganate

Aim
To determine the molarity and strength of the given Potassium
permanganate solution, by preparing a standard solution of 0.05M
Mohr’s salt.
Principle
Potassium permanganate in acidic medium is a strong oxidising
agent. It oxidises Fe2+ ions present in Mohr’s salt solution to Fe3+
ions.

𝑀𝑛𝑂%$ + 8𝐻" + 5𝐹𝑒 !" → 𝑀𝑛!" + 5𝐹𝑒 #" + 4𝐻! 𝑂

Procedure
Preparation of 0.05M solution of Mohr’s salt
1.96g of Mohr’s salt is accurately weighed and transferred into a
100 mL standard flask through a funnel. 10 mL of sulphuric acid is
also added. The crystals are dissolved in distilled water and the
solution is made up to the mark.
Estimation of Potassium permanganate
The given potassium permanganate solution is filled in the
burette. 10 mL of standard Mohr’s salt solution is pipetted out into
a conical flask. 10 mL of dil. Sulphuric acid is added. The Mohr’s
salt solution is titrated against potassium permanganate solution
from the burette. The end point is the appearance of permanent
light pink colour. Titration is repeated to get concordant values.
