Reinforcement Activity 2. Answer the following questions: (1 POINT EACH)

1. How would you differentiate the people of Guam and the islanders of Samar
and Cebu as to their encounter with Magellan and his men?

Rather than giving Magellan and his men any consideration, the people of Guam
demanded that they pay for the water and food they offered. In contrast, Zubu and
Zamal treated them with hospitability, friendship, and respect..

2. How did the people of Samar show their hospitality and friendliness?

Their hospitality and friendliness was demonstrated by providing them with food,
offering them a safe place to rest, and welcoming Magellan and his men in a peaceful
manner.

3. What do you think were the reasons for their friendliness of these islanders
especially when they saw the big vessels?

There is a great likelihood that the islanders were afraid when they saw a large
and powerful navy because they knew any retaliation would result in a war that they
could not win in as a result. As a result, the people in these islands thought that they
should befriend them, as it would be the safest, risk-free option for them to stay
friendly.
Reinforcement Activity 3. Answer the following questions: (1 POINT EACH)

1. Between Raja Zula and Lapu-lapu what do you think were their negative
traits?

Among their shared negative traits was skepticism, which might be disputed if it
were truly negative. Lapu-lapu and Zula both resisted surrendering to Portugal's King.
Because It's important for both chiefs to anticipate what will happen to the people in
the future and to consider both sides of the situation.

2. How did politics play a part in the relationship of the two chiefs in the island
of Mactan?

The relations between Lapu-Lapu and Raja Zula were also impacted by politics.
Both leaders held different beliefs regarding Spanish invaders and their attempts at
assimilation. In fact, they may have even fought over who should be considered
dominant on the island, and Zula saw the Spanish as an opportunity to bring down
Lapu-lapu.

3. What do you think was the lesson behind Magellan’s actions that led to his
death?

The moral lesson is that forceful acquisition of power only leads to greed, and
threatening an enemy within one's own territory without knowing their way of living
and without strategy will only result in unforeseen benefits.

4. We were taught that it was Lapu-lapu, the first Filipino hero to have killed a
foreign occupier, as the slayer of the captain-general. But who really killed
Magellan according to Pigafetta’s account?

Magellan was killed by many natives. A native ambushed him after he was
knocked unconscious during the battle, and they took off his helmet and wounded his
left leg. Several of them charged down upon us, and one poisoned arrow hit the
captain in the leg. Lapu-lapu did not kill Magellan; instead, the natives did.
Challenge: (2 POINTS)

The disunity in the island of Mactan during the arrival of the Spaniards is still
evident with respect to the intrigues, controversies and bickerings in our politics
today. We always hear of the slogan, “Magka-isa na tayo.”

(1) In what areas should we be united?

In this day and age, Filipinos need to be reminded that being united is essential
when our actions and choices affect not only ourselves, but also the community as a
whole and the country as a whole. For example, Filipinos choose to be in disunity
concerning many issues, since everyone has their own beliefs and opinions.
Nevertheless, these differing views have an adverse effect on advancing our country,
since it only widens the gap and causes us to be disunited.

(2) In what areas should we be more discerning and individualistic?

For our country to progress, we must fight together, not hinder each other's
progress. Political divisions here in the country are one good example of this, Philippine
culture revolves around the idea that complimenting someone's accomplishments would
label them as fellow Filipinos, whereas criticizing their accomplishments will make them
their enemies. The decisions and activities that can impact everyone should be followed
up with objective reasoning and ethical quality, since selfishness and lacking can forever
betray the majority.
