PCA-Political Frame Worksheet

Worksheet Objectives:
1. Describe the political frame
2. Apply the political frame to your personal case situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Briefly restate your situation from Module 1 and your role.

My pharmacy is undergoing a shift in how we do everyday operation. Due to

COVID we must learn how to add on a bigger workload with less help and resources. I

am the Pharmacy Operation Manager (RXOM). I oversee everyday operations as well as

the first in command for my technicians. I am new into this role and have been picking

the mess of my pharmacy manager (RXM). He ruled the pharmacy like a dictatorship and

has caused a lot of stress for my pharmacy. Although I have been figuring it out, it has

not been the easiest road.

2) Describe how the politics of the organization influenced the situation

As stated above the RXM ruled the pharmacy like a dictatorship. This caused my

technicians to fear him and they had little trust in him. Because of this the relationship

between manager and technicians was severely damaged. Bolman and Deal stated in

chapter 10 that political dynamics can be destructive. I do not think the RXM intended to

be this way, but his actions and words towards technicians made sure of it.

I think the problem the RXM struggles the most was he did not think about the

moral dimension of his leadership style. I as the RXOM must reevaluate the politics in

1
my organization. I want the workplace to be a safe environment. Everyday I am dealing

with the consequences of the RXM actions. Because of his toxic politics he played I have

to gain that trust from my technicians back.

3) Recommend how you would use organizational politics for an alternative course of

action regarding your case.

I would use the four principals of moral judgement. Mutuality, which stand for

everyone playing by the same rules. Generality, making sure everyone is following the rules.

Openness, the willingness to make decisions openly and not in secret. And caring, showing

concern for others. These are all things that my RXM failed to use to his advantage.

For the most part, I am already using these in my workplace. One I would like to

improve on is caring. These technicians have gone too long thinking their best interest were

not important. I knew coming into this role that I would be dealing with a lot of damage, but

nothing as close to what emotional damage the RXM had caused.

4) Reflect on what you would do or not do differently given what you have learned

about this frame.

What I plan to do differently is changing the whole political dynamic in my

pharmacy. It needs to be cleansed and refreshed. After learning how political dynamics are

something that are in every organization, it is up to me to make sure that it is a fair and

effective dynamic. I have a lot of work to do, but I know it will be worth it the end when I

have happier technicians.

I am grateful for this class and what I have learned because I do believe that it will

help me change the dynamic of the pharmacy to a better place. I will not make the same

2
mistakes as my RXM who never thought about the greater good of the pharmacy. If there

was one thing, I could change it would be standing up for my technicians even if I was not in

a leadership position. Chapter 10 has really allowed me to see the benefits of a positive

political dynamic.
