INNOVATION AND RESEARCH PROJECT I

What comes to mind when you hear or read the word research?

When I see/hear the word “research”, I think about…

Having a question and sitting to try to find the answer in the internet, books, or other resources.

1. To me, as a prospective teacher of English, research is… questioning my own knowledge and

trying to go beyond my perceptions to help me modify or fix them.

2. Research is something that requires… time, reliability, open-mindedness, problem solving,

3. Research is done by… someone who wants to expand their knowledge, understanding, could

be teachers in this case.

4. List around five or so words you associate with the word research…

4.1. Data

4.2. Process

4.3. Understanding

4.4. Evidence

4.5. Conclusion

4.6. Reflection

4.7. Knowledge

My own definition of research:

Research is an organized process that carries out problem-solving about a topic or an

issue by collecting and analyzing data using systematic methods in order to understand it

better, increase knowledge, reflect on it, and develop principles and theories about it,

which begins with identifying questions and culminates in presenting an answer to the

question.

Difference between knowledge and information

Knowledge Information
 Something you already know  Something previously
or you’re aware of unknown
 Is gathered through experience  Refined form of data
 It’s reusable, but you must  It’s obtained from
keep practicing it to maintain investigation, studying, or
it. instruction
 Knowledge is the reflection of  It’s the formal deliverance of
understanding knowledge to gain
understanding
 Knowledge is subjective  Information is objective

Note: understanding and comprehension

Why should we do research?

What are the benefits?

To become more effective teachers (making practical decisions)1 by providing

new insights2 into the teaching and learning process.

Research can help us gain a richer understanding (how things work)3 of the many

interrelated factors involved in learning. It can help us see how the ways we

organize learning environments can promote or inhibit growth4.

“Teacher’s most important tools are tasks,

It is what the Ss, does not what the teacher does”

1. Develop a topic, ask a research question

2. Locate information, read about the topic with search strategies, books, articles, websites

3. Set research questions, objectives, and hypotheses (An objective will precisely say what

should be researched, delineate the type of information that should be collected, and

provide a framework for the scope of the study. A well-formulated, testable research

hypothesis is the best expression of a research objective).

4. Choosing research study design

5. Evaluate and analyze information

6. Write, organize, and communicate information (take notes)

1. Come up with a research question

2. Read about the topic RQ

3. Design the data collection through instruments/methods

4. Gather/collect data

5. Organize, manage data

6. Analyze data

7. Generate findings/results/outcomes/conclusions
Research-driven knowledge vs Practice-based knowledge

Practice-based knowledge refers to the knowledge generated by teachers as a result of the

insights gained by observing language teaching and learning experiences as well as through the
observations of what happens in the classroom and the interactions teachers have with their
students and the materials they use.

On the other hand, research-driven knowledge involves knowledge found in books and journal
articles, in addition to knowledge that is shared by experts in particular academic and professional
disciplines that are the outcomes of empirical research studies.

1. The difference is that in practice-based knowledge, teachers create personal

constructions by confronting and solving the challenges faced in their teaching

activities, and research-driven is developed through a research process, i.e.,

the knowledge that is based on analyses of systematic data found in books,

websites or journal articles, this knowledge is shared by experts in particular

academic and professional disciplines that are outcomes of empirical research

studies.
