Metacognitive Reading Report 2 (MRR2)

1. What are the three (3) things that you significantly learned from the reading? Please
start by saying 'Before reading the article, I used to think that (insert thought). After
reading the article, I now think that (insert thought)'.

Before browsing through the entire article, I defined emotional intelligence as

knowing how knowledgeable a person is about their feelings and emotions. But after
reading the article, I now understand that emotional intelligence is our ability to
understand and manage our emotions to communicate effectively with others. I also
understood that emotional intelligence resulted from different fields of pathological
study that originated from way before. The study looked at how cognitive processes
affected how we think, and the other research was mainly an evolution of the
intelligence models given. It considered intelligence as a broader range of our mental
intelligence. It evolved from just viewing a person's intelligence in their ability to
perform a particular analytic task. Also, before, I used to understand that emotional
intelligence was only about determining how we felt. However, after reading the article,
I realized that Emotional Intelligence defines four primary mental abilities. These four
discrete abilities consist of understanding emotion, the management of emotion, the
perception of emotion, and the utilization of emotion to facilitate thought. Through
reading the article, I realized that these four discrete abilities have their use to know
how to define emotional intelligence. As a result of reading the article, I gained
knowledge that allowed me to define Emotional Intelligence better than before. Lastly,
before reading the article, I used to have little to no understanding of the social function
of emotional intelligence. But as I read the article, I then understood that the social
function of emotional intelligence is to help other people. The social functioning of
emotional intelligence is aimed at helping other people improve in their emotional state
by improving our communication towards them. I also understood that emotional
intelligence helps us know how we should interact with the people around us for us to
carry out any task given to us.
2. What three (3) things about the reading are unclear to you?

After reading the article, it was still unclear how the Mayer and Salovey model of
intelligence works. It was unclear to me how the model would measure a person's
emotional intelligence. Another fuzzy thing for me was how the different performance
tests could determine or measure a person's emotional intelligence. Lastly, I was still
unclear on the differences between EQ and IQ. And in such, I also wanted to know if a
person could have a high IQ and EQ.

3. What three (3) questions that you want to ask about the reading?

I wanted to ask: What is better to have, a high IQ or high EQ? Another question
that I want to be answered is: How can we improve or increase our EQ? The last
question that I wanted to ask is: Can we trust the results from an EQ test to measure our
emotional intelligence?
