What’s In?

An American philosopher and social theorist in the person of George Herbert

Mead had contributed a lot to social psychology in his distinction between the “I” and
the “Me.” One of Mead's most significant contributions to social psychology is his
distinction between the “I” and the “Me.” It's worth emphasizing that while this
distinction is utilized in sociological circles, it is grounded philosophically for Mead. His
target, in part, is no less than the idea of the transcendental ego, especially in its
Kantian incarnation. It is also important to note that the “I” and “Me” are functional
distinctions for Mead, not metaphysical ones. He refers to them as phases of the self
(MSS 178, 200), although he more typically uses the word self to refer to the “Me”
(Aboulafia 2016).
According to Mead's theory, the self has two sides or phases: 'me' and 'I. ' The
'me' is considered the socialized aspect of the individual. The 'me' represents learned
behaviors, attitudes, and expectations of others and of society. The 'I' represents the
individual's identity based on response to the 'me.
Gestalt psychology or gestaltism is a school of psychology that emerged in
Austria and Germany in the early twentieth century based on works of Max
Wertheimer, Wolfgang Köhler, and Kurt Koffka. By definition in britannica’s dictionary
it emphasizes that the whole of anything is greater than its parts. Therefore, the
attributes of the whole are not deducible from analysis of the parts in isolation. To
achieve the whole, you need its parts. The word Gestalt is used in modern German to
mean the way a thing has been “placed,” or “put together.” There is no exact equivalent
in English. “Form” and “shape” are the usual translations; in psychology the word is
often interpreted as “pattern” or “configuration.”
As cited by Dela Cruz, R.T,, & Dela Cruz R.P. (2017), the world today is
dramatically experiencing magnitude of changes in relation to environment, culture,
politics, and economics. Literally, the world is becoming smaller stems due to the rise
of technology and the breaking of barriers. Jollibee, as a Filipino brand, already made
waves in the US going neck to neck with giant food chains like Mc Donalds and KFC.
NBA can be streamed online and more foreign students are enrolled in ESL centers
or Philippine universities. Such phenomena are largely part of what we call
globalization.
We have created the map showing the origin of different components of
production be it agricultural, technological and/or commercial). As to one great
philosopher ones said that “man is a political animal.” Simply because we are, we
relate, communicate and socialize.

What’s New?

Activity: THE I in ME
Try to retrospect or asses your personality. Then divide the letter “I” into
compartments. (It’s up to you as to how many compartments you will create). Inside
the compartment, write down how you how you view yourself. Outside the letter “I”
would serve your “ME”. Write down how others or society see you as a person.
What is it?

A. THE I and Me

James (1890) distinguished two understandings of the self, the self as “Me” and
the self as “I”. This distinction has recently regained popularity in cognitive science,
especially in the context of experimental studies on the underpinnings of the
phenomenal self. This distinction was originally based on the idea that the former
(“Me”) corresponds to the self as an object of experience (self as object), while the
latter (“I”) reflects the self as a subject of experience (self as subject).

B. FIRST, SECOND, THIRD & FOURTH WORLD

Most if not often, the culture of the strong people or nations are likely followed
or modelled. The First and the Second is on a stiff competition. Those who identifies
themselves as Third and Fourth Worlds are its followers. Those living in the north, the
south, east and west are parts constituting the whole globe. If their consideration is
focused on the holistic, then social problems would be minimal (if not completely
erased). Is globalization a formula or orchestrated by the West? Does the West
outsourced the parts from the other parts of the globe in making the regions a part of
the whole?
C. THE 7 CONTINENTS & THE G7 COUNTRIES

There are 7 continents in the world and they are as follows Asia, Africa, North
America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia/Oceania. The biggest is
Asia but totally diverse in terms of culture and the economy. The most advanced in
terms of technological advancement is North America, Europe and some parts of Asia
while the poorest can be found in Africa.

In relation to world domination, the G7 countries can be merely associated to

it. The group originated in the early 1970s. It is composed of the United States,
Germany, France, United Kingdom, Japan, Italy, and Canada. Today, the G7 is
ascribed to be the seven wealthiest and most advanced nations in the world. In terms
of global performance they are the leading export countries with largest gold reserves,
not to mention largest nuclear energy producers and the top contributors to the UN
budget. (https://www.internationalrelationsedu.org/what-is-the-g7-its-purpose-and-history-of-
influence/)

Map showing the origin of the contributions (from different regions of the
globe) vis-à-vis the welfare of the whole and the parts.

Example: A Timex Watch

developed in the US,
leather straps made in Germany &
the USA. Switzerland

imports products to India

from United States of manufactured in
America France, Hong Kong,
and the Philippines

Technological Product that some parts are outsourced from different countries.

Earlier you have seen a map showing the origin of the different components of
a whole. The productive operation of a watch requires a village just like how to come
up with a personal computer, a refrigerator or an aircon. Some parts can be found in
the home country while other parts need to be outsourced.

Watches is very essential to human. We function base on time, we set

meetings, starts and end a class by observing a certain schedule posted by our clocks
or watches. We as mobile persons sees a wristwatch a must. It has evolved overtime
from a simple wristwatch to a heart monitoring rate, a fitness tracker, a GPS, etc. All
these and more has been materialized because of cooperation and collaboration
propelled by commercial reasons. Some of its raw materials were outsourced from
different parts of the world.
What’s more?

ACTIVITY 1: Parts of a Whole

Give an analogy of anything where the parts are contributing to the benefits of the
whole. Identify the corresponding parts and discuss their contributions. Stress the
resulting possibilities in case some parts are malfunctioning.

ITEM Parts and Their Functions Benefit

Ex. Table Screws, plywood, paint, Used in office or for dining.
steel, nail= to hold together
1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

ACTIVITY 2: Parts of a whole

Know the country of origin (where the parts are made or outsourced) and the
history of the component or parts constituting the entirety of the gadget. Provide
answers on the space below.

Gadget (the country where the part is outsourced)

(name of the Component Component Component Component Component
gadget in
general) 1 2 3 4 5
ACTIVITY 3: MAP OF ASIA

Assess what country shows dominance in the world as producer of goods. Locate on
the map also those countries who are partly or totally dependent of the production of
these highly globalized countries.

EXAMPLE:
- Japan= car distributor Philippines= buyer

DOMINANT COUNTRY DEPENDENT COUNTRY

Name of country Services offered Name of country Services
received/enjoyed
1. 6.
2. 7.
3. 8.
4. 9.
5. 10.

What I have learned?

Just try to imagine how human is incapable of doing when some of his/her
organs stopped functioning. Without these systems whether tangible or intangible
working closely together to benefit the whole, we will not get to enjoy life at its fullest.
We can see the parallelism of things or events because of imagination.
What I can do?

Write a reflection essay on the insights generated from the map of origin
