At Eternity’s Gate
Vincent van Gogh

This is Vincent van Gogh’s At Eternity’s Gate, an oil painting he created during
his final stay at the mental asylum at St. Rémy de Provence in 1890. Based from the
photo of the painting, an old man, which is also the subject of the canvas, is sitting near a
fireplace. As historians say, the way the man is sitting with his clenched fists over his
face portrays grief and frustration. Another, as the title of the canvas suggests, the
historians also say that even if van Gogh experienced deep feelings of sorrow, he
continued to have a faith in God and eternity, which was fully expressed in the painting.
