Experiment No 4 - Flow measurement - ( V – Notch)

Aim of the experiment : To determine the Coefficient of Discharge of a V Notch &

To calibrate a V notch (to obtain the Head / Discharge curve)

Apparatus : Hydraulic bench fitted with a V- Notch

Attachments to the hydraulic bench – Motor control unit

Stop watch & Measuring cylinder

Theory : Discharge through a V – Notch is given by

8 Ɵ
Q = 𝐶𝑑 . 15 . 𝑡𝑎𝑛 2 . (√2g) . H 5/2 -------------------------(1)

where Cd – Coefficient of discharge

g - Acceleration due to gravity

& H - Head of water above sill level

Ɵ - Angle of Notch

Writing the equation in log form

5 8 ∅
Log Q = 2
log 𝐻 + log{𝐶𝑑 (15) 𝑇𝑎𝑛 2 . √(2g) } ------------(2)

By plotting Log Q Vs Log H , Cd value can be determined from the intercept

By substituting the value of Cd in (1) & wring the equation in the form

Q = K H5/2

8 ∅
Where K = 𝐶𝑑 . 15 . 𝑡𝑎𝑛 2 . (√2g) .

Calibration curve is obtained by plotting Q Vs H

Procedure

1. Switch on the pump and set a low discharge using the control knob.
2. Allow water to come into the channel until the level of water is at sill level
3. Adjust the pointer of the gauge to touch the water surface and set the Vernier to read zero.
4. Increase the flow slowly to create a head of about 2 cm under steady conditions.
5. Note the head of water by the gauge
6. Note the time taken to fill the water tank of the bench to the given mark
7. Repeat 4,5 &n 6 for 2cm steps for about 4 more times
