Windows XP: Secure File Sharing

Users with Windows Service Pack 2 may have to allow file sharing through the firewall, click here for
details on exceptions through the firewall.

Disabling File Sharing (Recommended)

1. From the Start menu, choose Control Panel


2. Click the Network and Internet Connections icon
3. Click the Network Connections icon
4. Right-click the Local Area Connection icon and click Properties from the pop-up menu
5. Uncheck the box next to File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks.
6. Click the OK button:

Managing File Sharing

Find the directory you want to share using Windows Explorer

Select the directory


Right click, a dropdown menu will appear
Select Properties

Select the tab named Sharing.
Select the Share this folder radio button
The share name will auto fill.
Click Permissions

Everyone is the default and should be left there.
Choose OK

Select the Security tab
You will need to know the netid(s) of the user(s) you want to have access to this directory

Click Add

In the Enter the object names to select, type the NetID of the person(s) you want to have access (using
the YALE\netid format)

If you are adding multiple users separate them by using a semicolon (;)

Once you have added all the NetIDs that you want to have access.

Choose OK

This window will show the full names of the person(s) that now have access to this share.
When you select a user in the upper window, the permissions that they have will appear in the lower
window.

It is recommended that you allow only read access to this share.

If someone needs write access to this share you need to provide them with change access.

No one should have full control of a share on your local machine.

Click OK

You have now successfully created a shared directory on your local machine.
