1. (a) (i) In the space below draw a diagram to show the arrangement of electrons in the

chlorine atom. [Atomic number = 17] (2)

Ec: 2,8,7
Cl Atom: 17p, 17e, 18n
(ii) Using valence shells only, draw a diagram below to show the bonding which occurs in ICl. (3)

Bonding in ICl- iodine chloride

(covalent)

I-Cl

Total: 5 marks

2 (a) State TWO reasons why ICl is expected to have a low melting point. (2)

- ICl has weak intermolecular force of attraction since it is covalent

bonding
- Less energy is required to break the weak bond
(b) i) Analysis of a sample of ICl shows that it consists of molecules of the same molecular

formula, but with different molar masses. State a reason for this? (1)

ICl has molecules of the same molecular formula but different molar
masses due to isotopes of both iodine and chlorine.

(ii) Define the reason you have stated in b (i) above. (2)

Isotopes are elements of the same atomic number but different mass
number due to the different number of neutrons in the nuclei.

(c) Write a balanced equation for the reaction which occurs when chlorine is reacted with aqueous
potassium iodide. (3)

Cl2(g) + 2KI(aq) → 2KCl (aq) + I2(s)

(d) (i) When heated, iodine changes from one state into another. What is this process called? (1)

Ans: Sublimation

ii) Which of the following elements in Group VII: Iodine, Bromine, Fluorine or Chlorine, is a liquid at
room temperature? Ans: Bromine
(1)

__________________________________________________________________________________

iii) The elements stated in (d) ii) above are classified as what type of elements? (1)

Ans: Halogens

__________________________________________________________________________________

iv) a) When these elements combine with a metal, state the name of the bond formed: (1)

Ans: ionic/electrovalent bond

b) Give the name of the compound and structure formed if sodium combines with chlorine: (2)

Name: sodium chloride Structure: ionic lattice structure

Total: 15 marks

3. a (i) Define metallic bonding. (2)

In metallic bonding the cations are surrounded by a sea of

mobile/delocalised electrons.

(ii) Give the states in which a material with this type of bonding conduct electricity? (2)

Ans: Electricity conduction takes place when a metal is in the solid and molten states respectively.

(iii) What causes electrical conduction in the states given above? (2)

Ans: Electrical conduction occurs sue to the presence of Free, mobile or delocalized electrons

b (i) How is a salt formed? In your answer state the type of compound that is formed from a salt. (2)

Acid + base → salt + water

A salt is formed when an acid reacts with a base.
Type of compound: Ionic Compound

(ii) Write a chemical equation that forms from the reaction between calcium chloride and sodium
carbonate.

CaCl2(aq) + Na2CO3(aq) → CaCO3(s) + 2NaCl(aq)

(3)

(iii) Give the name of the salt preparation method for the chemical reaction in b (ii) above. (2)

Salt preparation method for above reaction is: Double decomposition

(iv) State the name of the process required to obtain each product for the chemical reaction. (2)

Product 1: Name- Calcium Carbonate Process: Filtration

Product 2: Name- Sodium Chloride Process: Recrystallisation

i) From the Table given above, state which Period these elements trend from: III (2)

__________________________________________________________________________________

ii) Give one reason the elements from the Table are placed in that Period. (2)

The elements are placed in this Period because they have the same
number of electron shells
