Volume of a Cube and a Rectangular Prism

Objectives

After going through this LAS, you are expected to:

1. visualize the volume of a cube and rectangular prism;

2. name the appropriate unit of measure used for measuring the volume of a
cube and rectangular prism;
3. derive the formula in finding the volume of a cube and a rectangular prism
using cubic centimeter and cubic meter; and
4. convert cubic cm to cubic m and vice versa; mL to L vice versa.

Lesson

Lesson 2.1. Visualizing the Volume of a Cube and Rectangular Prism

To visualize a volume, let us observe the Rubik’s cube.

Rubik’s cube is composed of smaller cubes.

How many cubes are there in the Rubik’s cube?

1
Notice that there are 3 rows of 3 cubic units
with a total of 9 cubic units all in a layer.
1 cubic
Rubik’s cube has 3 layers of 3 rows of 3
unit 3 layers cubic units. So, there are 27 cubic units in
of 3 all.
rows
Volume of a cube = side x side x side or V=
sxsxs
3 rows of V = 3 x 3 x 3 = 27 cubic units
3 rows of 3 cu. units
3 cu. units

Another example:

The box below is a rectangular prism. What is its volume?

2 cubic units
Height (2 units)

3 cubic units Width (3 units)

Length (4 units)
4 cubic units
Volume = length x width x height
4 rows of 3 cubes =lxwxh
2 layers of 4 rows of 3 cubes =4x3x2
24 cubes in all = 24 cubic units

Lesson 2.2. Naming the Appropriate Unit of Measure used for Measuring
the Volume of a Cube and a Rectangular Prism
Volume is the amount of space inside a space figure. It is measured in cubic units, the most
common of which are:

mm3 cm3 dm3 m3

Cubic millimeter (𝑚𝑚3 ) is used to measure the small amount of space occupied.

Cubic centimeter (𝑐𝑚3 )

Cubic decimeter (𝑑𝑚3 )

Cubic meter (𝑚3 ) is used to measure a large amount of space occupied.

2
Unit of measure used to find the volume of the following:

1. water in a swimming pool - 𝑚3

2. soil in a plant box – 𝑐𝑚3
3. air in a classroom – 𝑚3
4. water in a pail – 𝑐𝑚3
5. juice in a tetra pack – 𝑐𝑚3
6. garbage in a landfill – 𝑚3
7. shoe box – 𝑐𝑚3
8. water in a rectangular pool – 𝑚3
9. ice cube before it melts – 𝑚𝑚3
10. jewelry box – 𝑐𝑚3

Lesson 2.3. Converting cu. cm to cu. m and vice versa; mL to L and vice
versa
At this point, we must keep in mind that when solving problems involving measurements, we
have to work on similar units. That is, when one object is given in centimeters, the other
should be in centimeters as well. Otherwise, we need to convert.

Study the table between some units of measurement.

Solid Liquid
1 meter (m) = 100 centimeters (cm) 1 liter (L) = 100 centiliters (cL)
1 meter (m) = 1000 millimeters (mm) 1 liter (L) = 1000 milliliters (mL)
1 kilometer (km) = 1000 meters (m) 1 kiloliter = 1000 liters (L)

Example:
Problem: The length of an edge of a cube is 4 m. What is its volume in cm?
Understand:
What is asked?
It is to find the volume of a cube in cubic cm.
What is given?
It is the length of an edge of a cube is 4 m.
Plan:
Convert cubic meter to cubic cm.
Using a formula:
Solve:
Step 1: Convert meter to centimeter, since 1 m = 100 cm
4 m = ____ cm
4𝑚 × 100𝑐𝑚
=
1𝑚
= 4 × 100 𝑐𝑚
= 400 cm

3
Solution 2. Find the volume using converted 400 cm.
V=sxsxs
V = 400 cm x 400 cm x 400 cm
V = 64,000,000 cm3
Therefore, the volume of a cube in cubic centimeter (cm3) is 64,000,000.
Check:
s=4m

V=4mx4mx4m

V = 64 m3

Convert m3 to cm3 ; 1 m3 = 1,000,000 cm3

64 m3 = _______ cm3

64 𝑚3 ×1,000,000𝑐𝑚3
=
1𝑚3

= 64 × 1,000,000𝑐𝑚3

64 m3 = 64,000,000𝑐𝑚3

Learning Activities

General Directions: Work on Activities 1-3 that follow. Do it on a separate sheet of paper.

Activity 1. Visualizing the Volume of a Cube and Rectangular Prism

Find the volume of the following:

1. 2. 3.

Activity 2. Naming the Appropriate Unit of Measure for Measuring the

Volume of a Cube and Rectangular Prism
Write mm3, cm3, dm3, and m3 to tell which cubic of measure is appropriate to be used for the
following:

1. classroom 6. dice

2. shoe box 7. matchbox

3.globe box 8. container van

4. refrigerator 9. box of chocolate

5. ice cream cone 10. Gymnasium

Activity 3. Converting cu. cm to cu. m and vice versa; cu. mL to L and

vice versa
Solve the problem:

1. Crystal has a wooden cabinet whose length is 120 cm, height 155 cm, and width 95
cm. Find the volume of the cabinet in cu. m (m3).
2. In 1 ½ liter of cold drink bottle, only 250 mL of the cold drink is left. How much cold
drink is consumed?

5
Reflection

Directions: Complete the 3-2-1 Chart about your discoveries in Volume of a Cube and a
Rectangular Prism. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.

Learning Activities
Activity 1 Activity 2
1. 30 cubic units 1. m3 6. mm3
2. 12 cubic units 2 cm3 7. cm3
3. 12 cubic units 3. cm3 8. m3
4.dm3 9.cm3
5. cm3 10. m3
Activity 3
1. Solution:
Step 1: Convert cm to m (use the conversion table)
120cm
length (l)= × 1𝑚 = 1.20 m
100cm
155𝑐𝑚
height (h)= × 1𝑚 = 1.55 m
100𝑐𝑚
95𝑐𝑚
width (w)= × 1𝑚 = 0.95 m
100𝑐𝑚
Step 2: Find the volume using the converted measurements.
V=lxwxh
= 1.20 m x 0.95 m x 1.55 m
= 1.767 cu. m or m3
Answer: the volume of the cabinet is 1.767 m3.
2. Solution:
Convert 1 ½ L to ml (use the conversion table)
1L=1000ml; 1 ½ =1.5
1.5𝐿×1000𝑚𝑙
L= = 1500mL
1𝐿
Subtract:
1500mL
– 250mL
1250mL
Convert ml to L (use the conversion table)
1250𝑚𝑙
ml = × 1𝐿 = 1.250 L
1000𝑚𝑙
Answer: 1.250 L or 1250 mL cold drink was consumed.
