MULTIPLICATION

OF DECIMALS
for Mathematics Grade 5
Quarter 2 / Week 3

1
FOREWORD

This Self-Learning Kit (SLK) will serve as guide in

multiplying decimals up to 2 decimal places by 1 to 2-digit
whole numbers; in multiplying decimals with factors up to
two decimal places; and in estimating the products of
decimal numbers with reasonable results. This will be your
aid as you learn new ideas as you enrich your existing
knowledge about mathematical concepts.

In this learning kit, you will gain knowledge about

multipying decimal numbers.

The following are the special features of this SLK:

a. What Happened
This is the part in which you are asked to answer
activities that will allow you to apply what you have
learned prior to the discussion of the learning
competency/ies.

b. What You Need to Know

This is the part where the learning competency/ies
is/are discussed.

c. What Have I Learned

This is the part that aims to check your understanding
of the learning competency/ies recently discussed.

We hope that this Self-Learning Kit will help you

enhance your mathematical skills that would soon be
applied in your everyday life.

MULTIPLYING DECIMALS UP TO 2 DECIMAL
LESSON
PLACES BY 1 TO 2 DIGIT WHOLE NUMBERS
1

OBJECTIVES:
• Multiplies decimal numbers up to 2 decimal
places by 1 to 2 digit whole numbers
• Put decimal places correctly in products
• Be accurate in multiplying decimals

LEARNING COMPETENCY:
Multiplies decimals up to 2 decimal places by 1 to 2
digit whole numbers (M5NS-IId-lll.1)

I. What Happened
Pre-Activities/Pre-Test:

Hello, good morning

everyone! We are here to learn
how to multiply decimals by whole
numbers.

https://tinyurl.com/y3zbmkw6

Yes, but before that let us

first name the
the shaded region in
decimal form.

http://clipart-library.com/animated-math-cliparts.html

3
A. Name the shaded region in decimal form. Match colum A
with colum B. Write the letters only in your notebook.

A B

_____ 1. 0.40 0r 0.4 a.

_____ 2. 0.80 or 0.8 b.

_____ 3. 0.70 or 0.7 c.

_____ 4. 0.30 or 0.3 d.

_____ 5. 0.50 or 0.5 e.

B. Count the number of decimal places and write the letters of the
correct answer in your notebook:

1. 3.24 a. 3 b. 2 c. 1 d. 4
2. 16.5 a. 4 b. 3 c. 2 d. 1
3. 22.68 a. 1 b. 3 c. 4 d. 2
4. 53.225 a. 3 b. 2 c. 1 d. 4
5. 82.48 a. 4 b. 2 c. 3 d. 1
4
II. What You Need to Know
Discussion:

A Mathematics 5 book is 4.2 centimeters thick. How thick

will 4 books on a shelf be?

A. Performing the Activities:

1. To find the answer we multiply 4.2 by 4.

Solution:

4.2 ( 1 decimal place)

X 4 ( 0 decimal place)
16.8 4 x 0.2=0.8

4x4=16
You affix the decimal point in the product as determined
by the number of decimal places of the factors.

Count the number of decimal places in the answer.

The answer is 16.8 ( 1 decimal place)

2. If there are 21 books on a shelf, and the math book is 4.3

centimeters thick, how thick will the 21 books on shelf be?
Solution:
4.33 ( 2 decimal places)
X 21 ( 0 decimal place)
433
866__
90.93 (2 decimal places)

5
Again you affix the decimal point in the product as
determined by number of decimal places of the factors.
Count the number of decimal places in the answer
So the answer is 90.93 cm thick. ( 2 decimal places)

A. Let’s have some more examples:

Mario jogs 5.46 kilometers each day. In the

month of December he jogged for 22 days. How
far did Mario jog in the month of December?

Solution:

5.46 ( 2 decimal places)

X 22 ( 0 decimal place)
1092
1092
120.12 ( 2 decimal places)

Then count the number of decimal places in the answer.

The answer is 120.12 kilometers. ( 2 decimal places)

REMEMBER:

To multiply decimals by whole numbers, multiply them

as whole numbers then simply count the number of decimal
places of the factors to determine the number of decimals in
the product.

ESTIMATING THE PRODUCTS OF DECIMAL
LESSON NUMBERS WITH REASONABLE RESULTS
3

OBJECTIVES:
• Estimates the products of decimal numbers with
reasonable results
• Applies knowledge in rounding off numbers and
estimating the products
• Careful and accurate in rounding off numbers
LEARNING COMPETENCY
Estimates the products of decimal numbers with
reasonable results (M5N5-IIe-112)
I. What Happened
Pre-Activities/Pre-Test:
Mathanap Challenge #1

A. Estimate the sum/difference by rounding to the nearest whole

numbers.

1) 5.43 + 1.45 = _____ 4) 9.25 + 2.74 = _____

2) 8.25 – 2.48 = _____ 5) 8.26 – 5.23 = _____
3) 5.73 – 4.32 = _____

B. Read and understand the problem inside the box and answer
the following questions.

Christ Michael bought 8 notebooks at Php 8.75 each.

She gave ₱500.00 to the cashier. How much is her
change?

16
Can you guess the answer?

II. What You Need to Know

https://preview.tinyurl.com/y3thc6nm

https://preview.tinyurl.com/y2lj4ywy

A. Activity #1

➢ Estimate the product to the nearest whole numbers by

rounding the factors.
➢ Record the original numbers and the product.
➢ Try to check your answer by using calculator to determine if it
is reasonable.

1)2.45 2) 14.38 3) 25.23 4) 5.13 5) 6.05

X 1.13 x 2.12 x 12.12 x 1.21 x 3.2

17
❖ Processing Activity #1
✓ How did you find the activity?
✓ How did you estimate the product of decimals?
✓ Were you able to give the estimated product correctly? Does
it give a reasonable answer?
✓ What was the first step in getting the product?

DISCUSSION:

A group of a 178
recycling club sold 178 X ₱3.25
empty bottles. About
https://preview.tinyurl.com/yxt73b3r
how much is their sales if
each empty bottle sold
for Php3.25?

https://preview.tinyurl.com/yxf4qg6d

✓ The problem is not asking for the exact amount. It is asking

about how much their sales is. We just need to estimate.
✓ How do we estimate products?

Step 1: Round each factor to its greatest place value.

Step 2: Multiply the rounded numbers.

Now, let us try to solve the problem by following the steps above:

Step 1: Round each factor to its greatest place value.

3.25 → 3.00 We round 3.00 to the nearest ones place.

X 178 → 200 We round 200 to the nearest hundreds
place.

18
Step 2: Multiply the rounded numbers/factors.

3.25 → 3.00
X 178 → 200
000
+ 000
600
600.00

https://preview.tinyurl.com/y5c8anly

Since we know
already on how to
estimate products,
let us try to do the
next activity.
https://preview.tinyurl.com/y5c8anly

I learned that to estimate the product

round each factor to the
greatest/highest place value, then
multiply the rounded factors.

19
III. What Have I Learned
APPLICATION:
Find the actual product and estimated product of the
following: Write your answer in the table provided.

5 36.32 x 4.92 =

EVALUATION/POST TEST:
Solve the following and write the letters of your correct
answer in your notebook.
A. Estimate the products to the highest place value.
1) 26.3 x 23 = _____ A) 604 B) 605 C) 606 D) 607
2) 6.3 x 2.3 = ____ A) 13 B) 14 C) 15 D) 16
3) 2.1 x 3.102 = ____ A) 5 B) 6 C) 7 D) 8
