Abstract
This paper presents the results of the development of a vacuum cleaner, designed according to some new concepts learned
in Engineering Practice and Sustainability last semester with some knowledge this semester in Engineering Design
ambitiously to minimized global warming by turning the waste in to useful products like the vacuum cleaner itself. This idea
has been taken out from how we can turn non-biodegradable materials or waste around school vicinity, homes and town
areas like bottles, faulty simple machines, tin canes, batteries which contain sulphuric acid (H2SO4) and plastics into some
other helpful products or machines that can be used in making work easier like cleaning rubbish and dust in homes or
offices instead of people doing all the work and wasting money paying them. Despite the actual limitation of the final
vacuum cleaner, this work shows how this methodology can bring many interesting results.

Introduction
Vacuum Cleaner is a device created to collect rubbish and dust around school campus, homes, churches, offices and even
classrooms. It was created purposely to reduce the pollution of the biodiversity. After the industrial Revaluation began in
England 1760, many countries have come up with creative knowledge and began to invent sophisticated machines, tools,
and consumable products. As time passes, knowledge increases with humanity, thus massive production throughout the
globe. However, one very significant issue that is faced globally today is the Global Warming which was the effect of
industrial Revaluation. Without realizing the effect, many activities where done by human like mining, logging, burning of
fossil fuels, factories and companies manufacturing consumable goods, and developing areas into towns and cities but
ideas of recycling these final products wasn’t accomplished. Just recently after the issue has affected the globe badly,
world have looked for so many ways to recycle these goods and machines that are expired and of course they have come
up with creative and innovative ideas to minimize Global Warming. One of this is creating a Vacuum Cleaner which is a
simple machine as it is introduced by the first line. Creation of this will help reduce the throwing of rubbish everywhere
after realizing the fact that these waste are very useful, and can be used to make helpful device like vacuum cleaner,
others like chairs, tables and many mores.

Literature Review
In developing country like Papua New Guinea(PNG), management of waste and rubbish is very poor due to growing
population with lots of illiterates. Mostly in the towns and cities of PNG like Lae, Port Moresby, or Mt Hagen, rubbish is
hardly controlled even though there’s rules and regulation already in place. Thus, it spoils the beautiful environment that we
have and accumulates greater effect on to the global problem. One very important thing lacking is the knowledge of
understanding which they don’t realized the fact that these rubbish are very useful and can be recycled or turn in to other
products.

Vacuum Cleaner is made by the following rubbish;

1. Used car batteries: the acid that is found in the battery is called sulphuric acid (H2SO4) which is very dangerous and
harmful to the environment. It’s not safe and conducive but yet people are throwing unnecessarily after using it.
However, after realizing the fact that battery is chargeable, it can be reused. It will be used in supplying direct
Current (DC) to the starter motor which will turn the turbine attached to the motor.

2. Solar still: it will charge and energized the used battery after getting the energy from the sun. This energy will be
supplied to the motor which will power the turbine to rotate.

3. 1liter H2O bottle or container: they are thrown away after using but they are useful and they can be recycled or
reused in creating other products like Vacuum Cleaner. In this project, 1liter or 2liter will be used as the outside body
of the starter motor. It will prevent the motor from exposing to the outside airs that can affect it.

4. Starter motor: every moving device have motors which energized the whole device to do the work which it is
programed to do. Without figuring out the use of motor, people just throw it anywhere after the device is damaged.
This contributes towards the pollution of the biodiversity and adds effect on to the global warming. However, this
project will include a starter motor which will actually power the device by the help of the power supplied from the
used battery.

5. Positive and Negative cables: these wires will be used in connecting the used battery to the starter motor as well as
from the solar to the battery in order for the battery to be charged. Through these, the current will easily flow
allowing the device to do its work.

6. Used mortein bottle or spray: empty sprays are thrown everywhere without knowing another used of it which is very
helpful. It will be used in creating the turbine or propeller of the motor which will actually rotate.

7. Chewed bubble gums: though it is thrown after chewing but it’s very useful. It will be involved in holding together the
cables from the used battery to the motor.

8. Off cuts of a Pipe: Off cut pipes are very important too but it is thrown away after using. It will be considered in this
project since it plays an important function in Vacuum Cleaner.

Vacuum Cleaner is a simple machine but very powerful and helpful. It does a lot of things. We have taken this for our
major project since we realized the fact and the usefulness of some of the rubbish listed and explained above. This kind of
knowledge lack in our country and we are tremendously affected by our own doings. This project is the best project in
controlling rubbish and waste management. Therefore, we believe and hope that after completing this project, we’ll make
sure it is known to entire Papua New Guinean so that at least they can understand the purpose of their rubbish and make
use of them by creating a vacuum cleaner for themselves.

Purpose and the work of the machine

Many people don’t know what their doings. As it is seen everywhere, people hardy control their rubbish in public places
like the towns and cities. These rubbish cannot decay and immensely damaged the ecosystem of the beautiful environment
that we have. Therefore, we have come up with this idea and take it in to consideration for our major project. The main
objective of the project is to minimize global warming by controlling rubbish and waste. In addition, to achieve the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as per stated by United Nations: the goals to be fulfilled in 2030.
This simple machine will help in solving many problems. It is very important at working zones, office, classroom, homes,
schools, rooms and everywhere you go. This will help clean your dust and rubbish instead of you using broomsticks, mops, or
brooms which might exposed you to common flue or other air diseases.

Conclusion
It is obvious that such technological knowledge is lacking in most parts of the world including developing country like Papua
New Guinea. Though creative ideas are shared in internets but most people are illiterates and don’t have excess to the
internet. Thus, rubbishes are everywhere without control which have greater impact onto the biodiversity and immensely
adds onto the global issue like global warming. However, this project is the best and the easiest way which everyone can
be able to understand and recycle their rubbishes. In that way they can easily understand the usefulness of their rubbishes.
Therefore, I think that once my project is familiar to every Papua New Guineans, rubbish control will be in place and there
will be no lying of rubbishes everywhere in streets and towns like currently happening today. After 10 years PNG will not
be the same again but will be a productive nation in the Pacific.
