What is Theodolite?
• A surveying instrument and precision instrument for measuring angles in the
horizontal and vertical planes.

Uses of Theodolite
• Mapping applications and in the construction industry…
• Measurement of Horizontal and vertical angle
• Measurement of magnetic bearing of lines
• Locating points on line
• Prolonging survey lines
• Determining difference in elevation
• Setting out curves
• Aligning tunnels
• Mining works
• Road Constructions and etc.

Main Components of Theodolite
• The theodolite is the most intricate and accurate instrument used for measurement of horizontal and
vertical angles. It consists of telescope by means of which distant objects can be sighted. The
telescope has two distinct motions on in the horizontal plane and the other in the vertical plane.

Digital Theodolite

•Provides the value of observation directly in

viewing panel.

•The precision of this type of instrument

varies in the order of 1" to 10".

Digital Theodolite
• All the parameters required to be observed during surveying can be obtained.
•The value of observation gets displayed in
a viewing panel.
•The precision of this type of instrument
varies in the order of 0.1" to 10".

Digital Theodolite
• The important features of total station are:
• Key-board: Control all the functions are controlled by operating key board.
• Digital panel: Displays the values of distance, angle, height and the co-ordinates of the observed point,
where the reflector (target) is kept.
• Remote height object: The heights of some inaccessible objects such as towers can be read directly. The
micro-processor provided in the instrument applies the correction for earth’s curvature and mean refraction,
automatically.
• Traversing program: The co-ordinates of the reflector and the angle or bearing on the reflector can be
stored and can be recalled for next set up of instrument.
• Setting out for distance, direction and height: Whenever a particular direction and horizontal distance is
to be entered for the purpose of locating the point on the ground using a target, then the instrument displays
the angle through which the theodolite has to be turned and the distance by which the reflector should
move.

• Electronic Distance Measurement (EDM) Instruments:

Direct measurement of distances and their directions can be obtained by using electronic instruments that
rely on propagation, reflection and reception of either light waves or radio waves. There are specifically 3
ways of EDM:

- Infrared wave instruments - These instruments make use of micro waves. The range of these
instrument is up to 100 km. It consists of two identical units. One unit is used as master unit and the
other as remote unit. Just by pressing a button, a master unit can be converted into a remote unit and a
remote unit into a master unit.
- Light wave instruments - In these instrument amplitude modulated infrared waves are used. Prism
reflectors are used at the end of line to be measured. These instruments are light and economical and can
be mounted on theodolite. With these instruments accuracy achieved is ± 10 mm. The range of these
instruments is up to 3 km.
- Micro wave instruments - These instruments rely on propagation of modulated light waves. During
night its range is up to 2.5 km while in day its range is up to 3 km. Accuracy of these instruments varies
from 0.5 mm to 5 mm/km distance. These instruments are also very useful for civil engineering projects.
The advantage of using EDM instruments is the speed and accuracy in measurement. Several obstacles to
chaining are automatically overcome when these instruments are used.

Infrared Wave Instruments
• These instruments measure distances by using amplitude modulated infrared waves. (prisms
mounted on target are used to reflect the waves.)
• These instruments are light and economical and can be mounted on theodolites for angular
measurements.
• The range of such an instrument will be 3 km and the accuracy achieved is ±10 mm.

Light Wave Instruments

• These are the instruments which measures distances based on propagation of

modulated light waves.
• The accuracy of such an instrument varies from 0.5 to 5 mm / km distance and
has a range of nearly 3 km.

Microwave Instruments

• These instruments make use of high frequency radio waves.

• Thee instruments were invented as early as 1950 in South Africa by Dr. T.L. Wadley.
• The range of these instruments is up to 100 km and can.

Total Stations
• It is a light weight, compact and fully integrated electronic instrument combining
the capability of an EDM and an angular measuring instrument such as wild
theodolite.
• It can perform the following functions.
• Distance measurement
• Angular measurement
• Data processing
• Digital display of point details
• Storing data is an electronic field book

Levelling Instrument
• A levelling instrument is an optical instrument used to establish or
verify points in the same horizontal plane. It is used in surveying and
building with a vertical staff to measure height differences and to
transfer, measure and set heights.

Levelling Instrument
• Various types of Levelling Instruments
- Dumpy level
- Y-level
- Modern Tilting level
- Automatic level

The levelling instruments essentially consist of the following:

• A levelling head with three foot screws which enables to bring the bubble at its centre.
• Telescope that provides line of sight to bisect distinct objects.
• A bubble tube to make the line of sight horizontal either mounted on top or side of the telescope.
• A tripod for supporting the levelling instrument.

Levelling Instrument
• Important Definitions in Leveling;
• Line of Collimation or line of sight - The line joining the point of intersection of the cross wires of the
diaphragm to the optical center of the objective and its imaginary continuation.
• Reduced Level - The vertical distance measured above or below the mean sea level or benchmark is
called as reduced level.
• Benchmark - It is a permanent reference point whose elevations or reduced levels are known. All the
leveling operations start from benchmark.
• Back sight reading - The reading taken by levelling instrument on a levelling staff held on a point whose
elevation is known. It is very first reading taken on the benchmark after setting up the instrument.
• Fore sight reading - The reading taken on the point whose elevation is to be found out. It is the last
reading before shifting the instrument.
• Intermediate sight - Any other staff reading taken on a point of unknown elevation from the same setup
of the instrument. All sights which are taken between back-sight or fore-sight or intermediate sight.
• Change point - It is a point on which fore-sights and back-sight are taken.
