Heat
Unit (11)
All matter is made of atoms
What is matter?
Everything which has weight and occupies space is called matter.
Matter is made up of tiny, invisible particles called atoms.
What is an atom?
It is the smallest particle of matter.
Kinetic Energy
Kinetic energy is the energy of motion.
Temperature
Temperature is the measure of the average kinetic energy of atoms.
Heat
Heat is the transfer or flow of thermal energy from a warmer object to a cooler
object.
Thermal Energy
It is the energy that comes from heat.
Heat can melt solids.
Heat can evaporate liquids.
Thermometer
What is a thermometer?
It is an instrument used to measure the temperature, it is made of transparent glass
at one end of the thermometer there is a bulb. This bulb contains a liquid which can
be mercury or alcohol.
Reading the marks on the thermometer
We measure temperature by reading the marks. Each mark on the thermometer is
equal to one degree. These are read in two different scales, Celsius and
Fahrenheit.
The Celsius scale is also called centigrade and we write it like this °C.
Nothing can get colder than – 273 ° Celsius (a minus sign means the temperature is
less than (0°). This temperature is called absolute zero.
