Unit/ Title: Matrix Theory

Objective: The aim of this tutorial sheet is to demonstrate the application of Matrices in solving
system of equations related to various fields of Science and Technology
1. Are the following vectors linearly dependent? In each case select the maximum number of linearly
independent vectors and express the remaining vectors as their linear combination:
(i) x1 = (2, -1, 3, 2), x2 = (1, 3, 4, 2), x3 = (3, -5, 2, 2)
(ii) x1 = (2, 3, 1, -1), x2 = (2, 3, 1, -2), x3 = (4, 6, 2, 1)
(iii) x1 = (2, -1, 4), x2 = (0, 1, 2), x3 = (6, -1, 16), x4 = (4, 0, 12)
(iv) x1 = (1, 2, 1), x2 = (2, 1, 4), x3 = (4, 5, 6), x4 = (1, 8, -3)
[Ans.: , (ii) (iii) ,
(iv) , ]
2. Test the consistency of the following equations. Find the solutions if consistent:
(i) 4x – 2y + 6z = 8, x + y – 3z = -1, 15x – 3y + 9z = 21.
(ii) 3x + 3y + 2z = 1, x + 2y = 4, 10y + 3z = -2, 2x – 3y – z = 5.
(iii) 2x + y + z + u = 2, 3x - y + z – u = 2, x + 2y – z + u = 1, 6x + 2y + z + u = 5.
[Ans.: (i) consistent, infinite many solutions, (ii) 2, 1, -4, (iii) consistent, infinite many solutions]
3. Show that the equations 3x +4y +5z =a, 4x +5y +6z =b, 5x +6y +7z =c do not have a solution
unless a + c = 2b.
4.For what values of k the equations x + y + z = 1, 2x + y + 4z = k, 4x + y + 10z = k 2 have a
solution. Solve them in each case.
Ans. k =1, x = -3t, y = 1 + 2t, z = t; k = 2, x = 1 -3t, y = 2t, z = t.
5. Find the values of a and b for which the equations x + ay + z = 3, x + 2y +2z = b, x + 5y + 3z =9
are consistent.
Ans. unique solution when a -1, infinite solution when a = -1, b = 6; inconsistent when a = -1, b

6. Investigate the values of so that the system

has (i) a unique solution, (ii) no solution, (iii) infinite number of solutions.

7. Does the following system of equations possess a non – zero solution?

(a) x + y + z = 0, 2x – y – 3z = 0, 3x – 5y + 4z = 0, x + 17y + 4z = 0
(b) x + 2y + 3z = 0, 3x + 4y + 4z = 0, 7x + 10y + 11z =0
[Ans.: (a) No, (b) Yes]
