B. E-commerce in India
Driven by retail, financial services etc, India’s e-commerce sector has seen one of the
highest growth in the world in the recent years. Various types of e-commerce firms
operate in India including B2B, B2C and C2C. E-commerce attracts significant FDI and
creates large scale employment. One of the most prominent uses of e-commerce in
India is providing a platform for the MSME products which constitute about 80% of the
total industries in India. Similarly, for the customers, e-commerce provides flexibility in
terms of number of options, easy delivery etc. In this context, the government of India
has created the draft framework on e-commerce. The FDI limit on marketplace model
e-commerce platforms has been increased to 100% to further improve ease of doing
business.
The future of E-commerce across the lesser developed parts of the world will be highly
dependent on the reach and connectivity of the internet in these areas. With the advent
of 4G and the post pandemic situation where many businesses have gone online, there
will be a continuous increasing trend in the usage of e-commerce. It is also believed that
the B2B segment will emerge as a major giant. The access to smartphone, internet
connectivity and convenience of e-commerce will help in cross border retail shopping
thereby providing consumers with greater number of choices.
