According to Verma (2016), habit is a second nature. It cannot be changed for it is what
the people do in every situation. A habit is something that is done on a scheduled, regular,
planned basis and that is not relegated to a second place or optional place in one’s life. Study
habits play a vital role in students’ academic achievements and it really helps a student mold
their selves. Improving one’s study habit is not that easy for a student because not everyone can
apply a healthy habit. Their brains are impressive machines but they cannot handle everything at
once (Sah, 2018). Study habits contribute significantly in the development of knowledge and
perceptual capacities. It tells a person that how much he will learn and how far he wants to go,
and how much he wants to earn (Mubarak, Nasir, Rabia, and Tallat, 2017). The students may
identify their strengths and weaknesses in the learning strategies and they may become more
conscious about better study habits with the help of family and the university (Sand, 2013).
There are a lot of factors that affect a student’s study habits. Some researchers provided
examples of those. A study from Kumari and Chamundeswari (2015) stated that the students
select their groups and subject where they are interested and it helps them motivate themselves to
study. Better study habits and academic achievements of students can also be caused by good
school climate. Enhanced environment of school leads to better study habits and improves the
results of academic performance (Dogar, Mahmood, and Nisar, 2017). The influence of mental
health and parents won’t be missing within this discussion. The most important part of human
growth as a student in achieving the goal is mental health. Most of the students had a good
amount of happiness which showed a good effect for the student’s study habit (Bahrami,
Nematolahi, and Rajaeepour, 2011). Ekeke and Telu (2013) mentioned that parents can influence
their children through the steps that can help their children in their study habits. The study
recommended that parents should develop their positive attitude when it comes to giving
Illinois (2011) implies that being a consistent Honor Student is not easy. They also slack
off a bit, but still manage to get works done and to get good grades. When you are an honor
student, you are expected to be able to handle big workloads and the rest of your life. With all of
this comes, students feel a lot of stress and pressure on themselves. As mentioned to a study, it
showed that the participants do not have favorable study habits and attitudes (Mendezabal,
2013). Among the noted unfavorable study habits were inefficient time management, lack of
planning and concentration in their studies, poor skills in reading, ineffective test taking
techniques, and failure to inform their teachers of their difficulties with school work and ask for
their help. The participants also demonstrated unfavorable attitudes toward teachers’ classroom
behavior and methods. It was further revealed that their performance in licensure examinations
was quite low. The students also struggle on how the teachers behave and teach inside their
classroom. Academic success is not only about high cognitive ability but also in better study
habits and good attitude of both students and teachers. According to Bahrami, Rajaeeepour and
Namitolahi (2011), Students in each society are human sources that make future of their country
and existence of mental problems among students has many serious effects such as decreasing
the academic achievement and increasing, drop out and inefficiency among students. Studying
based on some specific criteria can lead to growth and development of personality dimensions in
humans which in turn can cause mental health and treatment of many disorders including
depression which is a very important health issue in the world. Acheaw and Larson (2014) said
that the majority of respondents believed that reading habits had an effect on academic
performance and that there was a direct relationship between reading habits and academic
performance. The study also found that laziness is one of the basic barriers to reading among
respondents.
Learning style is adopting a habitual or acquiring knowledge that everyone has different
styles on having good study habits (Navarra, 2019). Learning techniques such as: participating
actively to retain more information, reading lectured notes more than once, and understanding
them, don’t merely memorize and don’t ignore the importance of a healthy body and a healthy
mind. In addition to that, doing things such as: note-taking skills, planning your study sessions,
finding a therapeutic environment, establishes rules, and structure of your study sessions may
also help you improve your learning style (Alvarez, 2017). The study confirmed that reading
habit has an influence on academic performance and there is a relationship between reading habit
and academic performance. The study further found out that laziness is one of the basic
hindrances to reading among the respondents. Students must read at least two novel or fictions in
each semester to help them pass their course. (Acheaw & Larson, 2014). An increase in good
study habits correspond to an increase in academic achievement while a decrease of good study
habits leads to low academic achievement. To teachers with whom they can establish reflective
intellectual companionship that will help improve the study habits and good study habits rest on
the attitudes toward work and sense of responsibilities (Atsiayasiahl & Maiyo, 2015). The
students did not posses favorable study habits and attitudes. The students do not manage their
time properly, not focused on studies, poor skills in reading, and do not ask for help to the
teachers to their difficulties in studies in school. For good academic success, good study habits
and attitudes are important. If a student cultivates proper study habits, their academic
performance can be improved as well. Academic success is not only about high cognitive ability
but also in better study habits and good attitudes (Mendezabal, 2013). Also, the communicating
and connection to struggling students can lead for the improvement of their performance and
increase their motivation to study. This can help their learning style as well as their study habits.
Students who receive this kind of treatment usually perform better (Cote & Isbell 2009). Ehin
and Ele (2012) stated that reading habits are well-planned and deliberate pattern of study which
has attained a form of consistency on the part of students toward understanding academic
subjects and passing at examinations. Reading habits determine the academic achievements of
students to a great extent. Both reading and academic achievements are interrelated and
dependent on each other. Students often come from different environments and localities with
