Grand Central Park Beautification Project

On 11 January 2015, the town council organized a beautification project at Grand
Central Park. Volunteers were gathered at the car park next to Grand Central Park at 7.00
a.m. A representative from the town council thanked all the volunteers and allocated them
into groups of six. There were a total of five groups that were tasked to do different things,
such as picking up rubbish, trimming plants, cleaning toilets, cutting grass and identifying
and replacing any broken items in the park.
The groups did a fabulous job by completing all their tasks by 9.00 a.m. as the
public was welcomed to examine and provide any feedback they may have. Food and
drinks were served while volunteers conducted a survey. Everybody seemed pleased with
the transformation of the park. The representative gave a speech to thank all the volunteers
in a certificate presentation ceremony. She later reminded everybody that it was the
responsibility of all park users to maintain cleanliness and not to vandalise the amenities.

Question 4
Read the e-mail from Edrin to Shamsul.
To: shamsul@chitchat.com

From: edrin@chitchat.com

Hello Shamsul,

It’s nice to hear from you. I’m sorry I couldn’t reply immediately. I just returned from spending
a few days with my grandparents. How is everyone at home? My family is in good health.

I am no expert but I am happy to share some tips on public speaking and presenting. I learnt
them all from my mother and watching others during their presentation. If you are planning to
accompany your speech with some slides, do not put too much information in each slide. You want your
audience to listen to you. If there are too many words in each slide, your audience will concentrate on
reading and not listening to you. Remember to only put key points and not long sentences.

Relax and take deep breaths. You are bound to feel nervous and you may unwittingly talk too
fast. Speak slowly and clearly so your audience can grasp what you are trying to tell them.

Be confident. You may know the subject matter well and already know what to say, so speak
confidently. Your audience can see your confidence shine through and they will be confident in the
message you are trying to convey. Even if you are trembling or stumble, do not call attention to it. The
audience will lose confidence and interest in a less-than-confident speaker.

Lastly, once you’ve finished your presentation, take your leave. Don’t stay on stage and repeat
yourself. If there is a Q&A session, answer the audience’s questions and then leave.

That’s about it. I hope they will help you in your preparations. All the best, Shamsul. Do write
soon and tell me about your presentation. Bye.

My dad's as brave as a dad can be,

I rate him Number One,
He's not afraid of the dead of night,
Or anything under the sun.

He's not afraid of a late-night film,

Full of horrors on the telly,
And is he afraid of skeletons?
Not dad, not on your Nelly!

He's not afraid of meeting ghosts,

He'd even smile and greet 'em,
And things that scare most dads the most,
My dad could just defeat 'em.

He's not afraid of vampires,

Or a wolf-man come to get him,
If Frankenstein's monster knocked on our door,
He wouldn't let that upset him.

My dad's as brave as a dad can be,

And he's always ready to prove it.
So why, when a spiders' in the bath,
Does Mum have to come and remove it?
