Emerging

Technologies

"Technology by itself does not yield the greatest impact

on learning; it does so when it is embedded in a
scaffolding of support for learners and instructors"
-The Horizon Report 2020

As the population of higher education changes and the

student population becomes more nontraditional, the
types of technology has shifted and will continue to shift in
order to better serve this new student population.

technological advances graduate in the USA.

Some ways emerging technology is serving this student population:

As the workforce evolves and the demand for

Micro lifelong learning increases to equip the
workforce with new skills, micro-redentials are
Credentials
becoming more popular. These, sometimes not
for academic credit, address specific skills and
can be stackable to earn larger certifications
and degrees. These have found success both in
academic and professional contexts.

As the nontraditional student population

Alternative
increases, they are requiring educational
Pathways to opportunities that allow them to still fulfill their
Education personal and professional obligations.
Asynchronous online learning, more
personalized learning experiences, and hybrid
learning are all increasing in popularity in order
to respond to the needs of nontraditional
students..

Adaptive learning is a form of

Adaptive personalized learning. Adaptive learning
provides students with all of the
Learning
instructional resources they need and
tailors that content to the student based
on the results of formative assessment.
Adaptive learning does not negate the
role of the instructor, but instead moves
them into the role of coach during the
learning experience. Adaptive learning is
limited in its implementation at schools
due to the expensive cost of adaptive
learning technology and the intensity of
developing adaptive learning courses.
