LAB NO. 1 27/09/2022

INTRODUCTION TO POWER GENERATION
LABORATORY EQUIPMENT.
Lab Objectives:
After completing this lab, students will be able to;
 To learn about the laboratory equipment which will be used in power generation
laboratory.

 Theory:

Power Generation:
The conversion of energy available in different forms in nature into
electrical energy is known as generation of electrical energy.
The process of producing electric energy or the amount of electric energy produced by
transforming other forms of energy into electrical energy.

 Lab Equipments:

Three-phase AC Power Supply Module (Constant/Variable):

Three-phase power is a three-wire AC power circuit with each phase ac signal 120
electrical degrees apart.

Variable DC Power Supply:

A variable power supply is one which includes some means for
the user to easily adjust the output voltage and sometimes the current.

Power circuit breaker:

A circuit breaker is an automatically operated electrical switch
designed to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by excess current from an
overload or short circuit. Its basic function is to interrupt current flow after a fault is detected.

Synchronization indicator:
With six indicator lamps, white, for qualitative indication
of the phase relationship between mains and generator voltage (bright-dark circuit).

Synchronoscope:
In AC electrical power systems, a synchroscope is a device that
indicates the degree to which two systems are synchronized with each other. For two
electrical systems to be synchronized, both systems must operate at the same frequency, and
the phase angle between the systems must be zero.

Switchable capacitor battery:

System, with which different capacitance values can be
connected to the mains for reactive power compensation. The capacitor battery contains 4
switching levels which can be connected and disconnected using power contactors. Each
switching level can be controlled separately, internally or externally. The switching levels
each consist of 3 capacitors in star connection with discharging resistors.

Moving coil ammeter:

The D'Arsonval galvanometer is a moving coil ammeter. It uses
magnetic deflection, where current passing through a coil placed in the magnetic field of a
permanent magnet causes the coil to move.

Double frequency meter:

Double frequency meters are highly accurate and compact.
Offering linear read-outs, they provide visual indication of frequency for manual
synchronization of generators to net (busbar).

Double voltmeter:
The instruments have 2 independent moving iron movements to
measure the voltage for example between 2 generators or one generator and the net.

Conclusion:
In this lab we came to know about the basics of power generation and also got
the idea about the basic components of power generation.
