(5) EXECUTIVE SUMMARY (not to exceed 200 words)

Mosquitoes have always been very hazardous insect in our modern society. Mosquito is the
deadliest animal in the world. The peelings of the lanzones can be an alternative material for a
mosquito repellent. This study reported: The use of lanzones peelings as an organic alternative
ingredient in mosquito coils. The lanzones peelings mosquito coil was proven good, eco-friendly,
cheaper, safer, and beneficial repellent. We conducted two set-ups: The mosquito coil made of
lanzones peelings and the Baygon mosquito coil (Commercial) to compare the two mosquito coils.

(6) INTRODUCTION
A mosquito coil made up from natural plants are safer to the community and are far from
health risks because of their organic substances. One example is lanzones peelings that can be used
as natural mosquito repellent by drying and burning the peels. It produces an incense and releases
smoke that have this aromatic smell that repel mosquitoes. The edible tropical fruit lanzones (Lansium
Domesticum) is native to Southeast Asia. The aim of this study is to produce an alternative mosquito
coil using lanzones peelings

Hypothesis:
Lanzones Peelings Mosquito Coils are more effective than Commercial Mosquito Coil.
(6.1) RATIONALE/SIGNIFICANCE (not to exceed 300 words)

Beneficiaries:
Students. Students can benefit from the information from the study that can be helpful for
them to have a great understanding and knowledge about the making of alternative mosquito
coil/repellents.

Community. This study can be a discovery in our community and can stand as a guide for
everyone in making an organic mosquito coil that they can make in their homes.

Bureau of Plant Industry. This Mosquito coil made of lanzones peelings can be developed
from further studies by the Bureau of Plant Industry.

Researchers. With the results of this study, researchers may improve the study and also
improve their understanding and knowledge about the use of lanzones peelings as a mosquito coil.

(6.2) THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

This study is supported by the theory of Olfaction and the Action of Mosquito Repellents.

To produce an odor sensation, a substance must be volatile and its molecules must come
into contact with the olfactory end organ, which may require some measure of lipoid solubility. This
much is generally agreed, but beyond this there has been no accepted theom of the triggering process
by which the odorous molecule initiates a discharge of the olfactory nerve. In part, this ignorance has
been due to the lack of any secure correlation between the odors of substances and the chemical
constitution or reactivity of the odorous molecules, or their physical shapes or electrical properties. A
correlation of odor with molecular vibrational modes would be consistent with most of the facts of
olfactory chemistry, but this hypothesis has failed to win general acceptance up till now because, there
has been no direct evidence of a correlation between odor and vibrational frequency, and, there has
been no suggestion of a mechanism whereby a molecular vibration could trigger a nervous discharge.
Some evidence bearing on both these objections has recently been brought forward which is of
considerable interest in relation to the problem of insect attractancy and repellency.
(6.3) OBJECTIVES

General: To produce an organic alternative and less harmful mosquito coil.

Specific: Determine the efficacy of lanzones peelings as an alternative source of a mosquito repellent.

(7) REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Our country, the Philippines, is a tropical country. Now that pollution is destroying the natural
climate the Philippines has, scorching heat and heavy rainfalls are what we now experience. These
are what causes dengue. Now that more and more mosquitoes have this virus, we have to use
mosquito coil to lessen the chance of getting the virus. As we all know, we mostly don’t use the
peelings/skins of fruits and throw them away, and with this study, we can lessen the pollution in our
community and reuse the peelings/skins by using them to make a new mosquito coil from organic
and other alternative materials that can be safer to the community that is far from health risks.

(8) METHODOLOGY
The following are the procedures for creating and testing the alternative organic mosquito coil:

Materials. To accomplish this study, the researchers will collect the materials to be used such
as; pulverized sundried lanzones peelings, pulverized charcoal, cornstarch, tablespoon, gloves, water,
and a container.

Testing the Created Mosquito Coil. Two set-ups, which are the mosquito coil made of lanzones
peelings and Baygon Mosquito Coils (Commercial), will be compared and tested. The two different
mosquito coils will be lit and smoked until completely burned. Lastly, a Visual Quality Rating (VQR) will
be done to determine their effectiveness, odor, how long they will last, and their safety by rating them
from 1-5.

(9) EXPECTED OUTPUTS AND POTENTIAL IMPACTS

The mosquito coil made of lanzones peelings is expected to be more effective than the
commercial mosquito coil. This study will also help others to discover that lanzones has a potential in
being used as a mosquito coil in a much more convenient and safer way.
