"The Hollow Flashlight"

In 2013, at age 15, Canada's Ann

Makosinski invented an LED

flashlight that needs no

batteries — it runs on heat from

the hand that's holding it!

taps the body's thermal energy

using Peltier tiles, which

produce electricity when you

heat one side and cool the

other.
GREGORIO Y. ZARA

Gregorio Y. Zara (8 March 1902 –

15 October 1978) was a Filipino

engineer and physicist best

remembered for inventing the

first two-way video telephone.

Zara's video telephone

invention enabled the caller and

recipient to see each other

while conversing, laying the

foundation for video-

conferencing.
DANIEL DINGEL

Hydrogen Reactor

Car / Water Power

Car
Dingel said he began working on

his hydrogen reactor in 1969, and

claimed to have used the device

to power his 1996 Toyota Corolla.

Dingel explained that his

invention splits from water in an

onboard water tank, producing

hydrogen and does not produce

any carbon emissions.

ROBERTO DEL ROSARIO

Karaoke
A customer wanted him to

perform at a party but he was

too busy, and he recorded the

backup music on tape and gave

it to the customer.

The world's first karaoke machine,

the Juke-8, was built by Japanese

inventor and musician Daisuke

Inoue in 1971. But it is Filipino

inventor Roberto del Rosario who

holds the machine's patent. He

developed the Karaoke Sing-Along

System in 1975.
BRYAN YUSON

A Filipino made-

Train

Invented by electronics engineer

Bryan Yuson, the train was

designed with three charging

systems; the solar panel, wind mill,

and the pedals. Yuson said that the

energy from the three systems will

be charged to the six batteries

attached to the train and will power

up the two 24 volts motor to run

the train.
ALFREDO M. ANOS, SR.

3 in 1 Fire Truck

Anos invented the Anos

fire truck called Patriot. It is

fire truck of three-in-one

package that can be

simultaneously a fire truck,

a rescue vehicle, and an

ambulance.
RUPERTA DAVID

Patis

Patis or Fish Sauce was

accidentally discovered by Ruperta

David, also known as "Aling Tentay".

It all started when her family began

a dried fish business shortly after

the war. Then one day, Aling Tentay

stored a salted fish inside jars. The

stored fish began to transform to

what is known as the patis.

NARCISO MOSUELA

The Superkalan

The Superkalan is a stove

that can be powered by

any substance that burns.

Narciso Mosuela of the

Filipino province of La

Union invented it and

received the Best Design

award from the Food and

Agricultural Organization

(FAO) in 1987.
ANGEL ALCALA

Artificial Coral Reefs

Alcala may be best known

for his research related to

the rehabilitation of coral

reefs. In 1977, he created

the first artificial reef, and

this reef became a model

for many other fisheries

development programs

around the world.

FE DEL MUNDO

The Incubator
Fe del Mundo is the first

Asian who was able to

enter the prestigious

Harvard University School

of Medicine. She is credited

for her studies that led to

the creation and

development of the

incubator and jaundice-

relieving device.
MARIA OROSA Y YLAGAN

Banana Catsup

Banana Catsup is a condiment

that many Filipinos love to use

for almost every known dish in

the Philippines. This was the

brainchild of food technologist

Maria Orosa y Ylagan (1893–

1945). According to historical

accounts, she created the first

recipe for banana catsup.

ROLANDO DELA CRUZ

Anti Cancer Cream

Rolando dela Cruz is a Filipino

inventor who won the gold medal

for creating an anti-cancer cream

at the prestigious International

Inventor’s Forum in November of

2005. It is called “DeBCC” cream, and

was developed from cashew nuts

and other local herbs. It is used

specifically for basal skin carcinoma

(BSC), which is known as the most

prevalent type of skin cancer

worldwide.
FRANCISCO QUISUMBING

Quick Ink

This is a quick-drying ink that was

invented by Filipino chemist

Francisco Quisumbing. This ink was

very innovative in the past and was

further developed to work with

Parker Pens. This ink isn’t just a

quick drying, it is also water

resistant, doesn’t clog the pen

opening, doesn’t blot, and won’t

fade. This ink is considered one of

the best-selling inks for fountain

pens.
ROLANDO DELA CRUZ

Mole Remover
In the year 2000, Rolando dela Cruz

developed a formula that could

easily remove deeply grown moles

or warts from the skin without

leaving marks or hurting the

patient. The formula was made

from cashew nut extracts

(Anacardium occidentale), a

common plant in the Philippines.

This formula won a gold medal in

the International Invention,

Innovation, Industrial Design, and

Technology Exhibition in Kuala

Lumpur in the year 2000.

DIOSDADO BANATAO

16-Bit Microchip
Diosdado Banatao, or more

popularly known as Dado Banatao,

he is responsible for designing the

first single chip, 16-bit

microprocessor-based calculator.

Also, in 1981, he developed the first

10-Mbit Ethernet CMOS with silicon

coupler data-link control and

transreceiver chip. He is also

credited for the first system logic

chip set for IBM’s PC-XT and the PC-

AT as well as the local bus concept

and the first Windows Graphics

accelerator chip for personal

computers.
