LET’S UNDERSTAND
Expressionism and Composers
Expressionism is an art movement that began in Germany during the twentieth century.
It is a term originated in the visual arts and was then applied to other arts including music before,
during and after World War I. In music, it is characterized by subjectivity, dissonant, and atonal.
Expressionist composers poured strong emotional expression into their music and explored the
subconscious mind. It made use of polytonality (simultaneous use of two or more keys), and the twelve-tone
scale which was established by Arnold Schoenberg, the central figure of expressionism and one of the member
of the Second Viennese School.
ARNOLD SCHOENBERG
Arnold Schoenberg was born in Vienna, Austria on September 13, 1874. He was one
of the most influential figure and founder of musical Modernism of the early 20th century who
created new method in composition using the twelve-tone system. A self-taught musician, he
began to compose simple pieces for the violins at age 8.
In 1901, he moved to Berlin where he worked as a musical director in Uberbrett, an artistic
cabaret wherein he wrote many songs for that group. He became a composition teacher at the Stern Conservatory
with the help of a German composer, Richard Strauss. In 1902, he composed his only symphonic poem for large
orchestra “Pelleas und Melisande”. Schoenberg came back to Vienna in 1903, and became acquainted with
Gustav Mahler, an Austrian composer who became one of his strongest supporters. Schoenberg left Europe and
migrated in America when the Nazis came to power in 1933, where he spent most of his life. He became a
professor at UCLA and influential teacher in the United States. Later on, his health deteriorated and forced him
to resign from his academic appointment. He died in Los Angeles, California, USA in July 13, 1951.
Schoenberg was known for his radical sound of music and completely abandoned tonality. His most
popular expressionist composition is “Pierrot Lunaire” where he used the “Sprechstimme” (vocal techniques
between singing and speaking). His other composition includes piano music, instrumental and orchestral music,
cantata, opera, oratorio, choral, and others. Some of his known works are: Verklarte Nacht, Pelleas und
Melisande, Erwartung, Gurreleider, Three Pieces for piano, op. 11, string quartet in D Major, and Fantasia.

Arnold Schoenberg developed a new method in composition called the “twelve-tone system. It is a
method of writing music using the twelve semitones through retrograde, inversion and retrograde inversion.
Below is an example of twelve-tone system.
1. Original form (Forward) 3. Inversion (Upside down)

2. Retrograde form (Backward) 4. Retrograde Inversion (Backward and upside

Cubism: Shape the future

The cubist style derived its name from the word “cube”, a three-dimensional geometric figure
composed of strictly measured lines, planes, and angles. Cubist artworks were, therefore, a play of planes and
angles on a flat surface

Health 10 Quarter 1 Week 2

Objectives
a. Identify the different Health Professionals
b. Enumerate the different Health Facilities
c. Appreciate the importance of Health Services

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

Health Services – it is a service that provides medical treatment and health care to a person or
to a particular group. The aim of these program is to appraise the health conditions of individuals
through screening and examinations, cure and treat disorders, prevent and control the spread of
diseases, provide safety, emergency, care, and first aid and ensure a follow-up program for
individuals who have undergone treatments.

Health Care Providers refers to health care professionals who provide medical care and services
to people who need health care. There are different types of health care providers such as:
• Health Professionals are individuals who are licensed to practice medicine and other allied
health programs. A Physician is an example of a health professional. They record patients’
medical history, perform medical examinations, provide diagnosis, and prescribe medication.
Health professionals who have specialized training based on an area of health is called specialist.
• Healthcare Practitioners is an independent health care provider who is licensed to practice

Physical therapists
Healthcare Facilities are places or institutions that offer health care services. There are different
types of health care facilities. (Meeks, et al., 2011)
a. Hospital is an institution where people undergo medical diagnosis, care, and treatment. It also
offers different types of medical care such as the inpatient and outpatient care. Inpatient care
refers to care given to individuals who need to stay inside the hospital to receive proper treatment,

There are two classifications of hospitals in the Philippines: general and specialty. General
hospitals have complete medical, surgical, and maternal care facilities. Philippine General
Hospital, Baguio General Hospital, Cebu General Hospital and Davao Medical Center are
examples of general hospitals. Specialty hospitals handle a disease or condition or deal with
only one type of patient. Example of this kind of hospitals are the Philippine Heart Center, Lung
Center of the Philippines, and National Kidney Transplant Institute.
b. Walk-In Surgery Center is a facility that offers surgery without the patient being admitted in
the hospital.
c. Health Center- The services in a health center cater to a specific population with various
health needs.

Health Insurance is a financial agreement between insurance company and an individual. It

offers various types of coverage such as Medical Insurance pays for the fees of health
professionals, laboratory tests and prescription drugs. Major Medical Insurance offers payment
for long-term or chronic diseases such as AIDS and cancer. Hospitalization Insurance pays for
the stay of the patient inside the hospital. Surgical Insurance pays for surgery fees. Disability
Insurance provides financing for members who meet accidents or who suffer from illness.
Health insurance maybe sourced from both public and private companies. PhilHealth is an
example of public health insurance program and only requires small monthly contribution from its
members. There is also a health care provider that offers medical services that are availed through
a prepaid amount of money, it is called as Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)

Let’s Analyze
Direction: True or False. Write true if the statement is true. If false underline the word/words that
makes the statement false.
1. Health programs and health insurance are very useful for all members to avail of health
services with assistance for their medical and hospital expenses.
2. One of the most common form of prepaid health plan is the health maintenance organization
(HMO) that provides postpaid health care for its members.
3. Health care provider are trained professional who provides people with medical health care
and services.
4. There are different types of physicians based on their area of expertise and they are called
specialist.
5. A facility that offers surgery without the patient being admitted in the hospital is called specialty
hospital.

Let’s Apply
Direction: Fill in the correct word in each blank to complete the selection.
The access to health care services varies from communities or countries. The term health care
providers refer to health care _______________who provide medical care and services to people
who need health care. Health professionals who have specialized training based on a particular
area of health is called _______________. Institutions or places that offer health care services are
