Presentation 01
BEFORE WE START
 Students who are trying to cheat are actually cheating
themselves out of real education.
 Studying in a group is an acceptable conduct, but copying
answers from each other is a violation to the Academic
Integrity Policy .
 Other forms of violating the Academic Integrity Policy include:
 Cheating.
 Plagiarism.
 Fabrication of data.
 Presenting false credentials.
 Collusion.
 Free-riding.
 Academic Integrity Policy at Abu Dhabi University is fully
enforced and the violators are usually dismissed from the
university.
 Please carefully read the Academic Integrity Policy and fully
adhere to it. 2
IMPORTANCE OF HIGHWAYS
• Highways are the backbones for any new developments.
• Highways account for about 90% of all passenger-kilometers
traveled in the world.
• Commercial trucks transport about 37% of all freight ton-
kilometers in the world (80% of the dollar value of all goods).
• Almost all transportation modes involve highway transportation
at some point for their initial collection and final distribution.
• Highways are also a main source for pollutions:
• Highways are responsible for 25% of greenhouse emissions
• More than 50 percent of all carbon monoxide (CO) emissions.
• Sadly, approximately 1.3 million lives are lost every year
because of highway accidents.

SAFETY IMPACTS OF HIGHWAYS

• More than 1.3 million lives are lost on highways every year!
• Examples of annual number of road traffic fatalities [WHO 2015]:
• Sweden: 260 (2.8 per 100,000 capita)
• Denmark: 191 (3.5 per 100,000 capita)
• Ireland: 188 (4.1 per 100,000 capita)
• Finland: 258 (4.8 per 100,000 capita)
• Canada: 2,077 (6.0 per 100,000 capita)
• USA: 32,719 (10.6 per 100,000 capita)
• Argentina: 5,209 (13.6 per 100,000 capita)
• India: 137,572 (16.6 per 100,000 capita)
• Chad: 1,420 (24.1 per 100,000 capita)
• Approximately 70% of road traffic fatalities are male.
• Approximately 22% of road traffic fatalities are pedestrians.

ROAD SAFETY – A GLOBAL CHALLENGE

• Since road safety is a global challenge, several regional and

international organizations are collaborating to increase road
safety and reduce the large number of annual deaths related to
road traffic accidents.
• Organizations include:
• World Health Organization.
• United Nations’ Road Safety Collaboration.
• Global Road Safety Partnership.
• Asia Injury Prevention (AIP) Foundation.
• Global Road Safety Facility (by World Bank).
