1. What are the features of this academic text that qualify it as academic writing?

This academic text is well-structured, and demonstrate the comprehension of

the texts, it references. It moves logically and clearly from one paragraph to the next.
This text's subject is a fantastic place to start. Once you've decided on the genre,
determining the framework is easy. This academic text have a predetermined structure
and are organized in a specified manner. This facilitates the reader's reading of the text
and helps them comprehend the content more fully.

2. Which pattern of paragraph development is evident on the first paragraph?

Justify your answer.

The pattern of paragraph development in the first paragraph is the Deductive-

Inductive Pattern. It is because empathy is stated in the first sentence and restated in
the last sentence of the paragraph. {Expression of empathy towards others is natural to
people. According to new research published by the American Psychological Association,
empathy is an expression of understanding others’ feelings. It is described as inspiring. However,
there are times that people choose to avoid doing it. It is because empathy requires tremendous
mental effort. People avoid empathizing with others unless they have the strengths and
capabilities to do it.}

3. What idea is presented in bold sentences in paragraph 1? Main idea or

supporting detail? Why do you think so?

In the paragraph 1, it concerns individuals who fail to empathize with others. It is

a main idea because, in my opinion, the purpose of writing this article was to
communicate empathy.

4. Which is most likely the title of the text?

In my opinion after reading the text the most likely title is “A Study of Empathy”.

5. Why is your answer the most probable title of the article? Provide textual
evidence.
A Study of Empathy because when I read the story, I have seen that they were
studying empathy and that they conducted an interview in which many participants
stated that showing empathy was draining on their mental health. If it is not studied,
there are many people who are unaware of mental health, and they also observed that
most people do not want to put forth the mental effort to understand mental health or
show empathy for others, even if it involves positive emotions.

1. What were your thoughts or ideas about structure of academic text prior to the
discussion of this lesson?

Academic text have two structure. The minor grammatical units and the major
grammatical units. Minor grammatical units is organize in a specific way and have a
clear structure. Major grammatical units is easier to navigate text and to understand it
better. If I would make an academic writing and to choose one of the structure of
academic text I would choose the major grammatical units. I would choose major
grammatical units for my readers to understand it very quickly without any questions
about the phrases words they didn’t understand.

2. What new or additional ideas did you learn after taking up this lesson?

My new learning in this lesson is the 5 Patterns of Paragraph Development and the
Structures of Academic Text. Wherein, Deductive{topic sentence-beginning}
Inductive{topic sentence - end}, Deductive-Inductive{topic sentence-beginning and end},
Inductive-Deductive{topic sentence-middle} and Hinted Pattern{topic sentence-implied}
are the 5 Patterns of Paragraph Development. While the 2 Structures of Academic Text
are the Minor grammatical units [organize and clear]and Major grammatical units[easy
to navigate text and understand].
