SCHOOL LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT IN COMBATTING PANDEMIC

Leadership is the skill of motivating and guiding a group of people to act towards achieving a
common mission in school setting. School personnel and teachers are supervised with a strategy to meet
the vision and mission of the school.

Management is the art and skills of organizing and utilizing people to perform well and
cooperate towards attaining the vision.

Leaders are needed to be knowledgeable on how to inspire people not just to follow orders but
doing it with such dedications, they should possess the ability to influence people through their actions
and words.

There are different styles of leadership as follows: Autocratic, Democratic, Strategic style,
Transformational, Team, Cross-cultural, Facilitative, Laissez-faire, Transactional, Charismatic, and
Visionary. But with the on-going pandemic autocratic, cross-cultural, laissez-faire, and Charismatic form
of leadership may not be the kind of management to be used in the transitioning of a school to a new
normal situation in our educational system as it may not support what Dep Ed memorandum 71 series
of 2021 vision is all about. While the rest of the different styles can be of use in the Dep Ed preparation,
implementation of expansion and transitioning to new normal of education system of high school
students.

Democratic Leadership, in this leadership style there is an open communication between the
leaders and subordinates. School admins, personnel and teacher can freely express and involved
themselves in making decisions thus they contribute in the leaders final solution as the leader will still
have the final responsibility, and also known to delegate responsibility. This is the most preferred type
of leadership and entails fairness, competence, creativity, courage, intelligence and honesty.

Strategic Leadership is one that involves a leader who is essentially the head of an organization,
the strategic leaders fills the gap between the need for new possibility and the need for practicality by
providing by prescriptive set of habits such as in transitioning to new normal this kind of leadership is
necessary for the strict observation of the health protocol.

Transformational Leadership, is all about inspiring other to change the system as everyone are
trying hard enough to adapt the new normal in educational system one should be selfless, must process
empathy and rapport to engage the parents and the learners to participate and to reach Dep Ed mission
not to hinder their growth by keep on going to school no matter how hard it is in this time of pandemic.

Team Leadership, is the creation of clear purpose and one direction of a team that involves
collaborative efforts from the School Principal, Administration, Personnel, Teachers, Parents, Learners,
even involvement of Barangay Officials and City Health Office Representative each supporting each
other until they achieve their goal no one being left behind in the mission of the school that it will
combat hindrances in this certain time.

Facilitative Leadership, is one of the emerging leadership paradigms making its way into such
organization such as the school, it is a co-creative between the leader and subordinates, involving the
leader to facilitate deep collaboration, and leader should be hands on, monitoring, offering process
suggestions, and interventions to help the school community in the right track.
Transactional leadership depends on self-motivated people who work well in structured,
directed environment, transactional leader is someone who values order and structure and has formal
authority and position of responsibility in an organization.

Last but not the least, Visionary Leadership, this is the rarest kind and most powerful kind of
leadership for a School Principal not only that they would be expected to deliver what they have to in
such position, but as well had visions to form or establish a social change, and strategize a way to create
the skills to achieve such visions.

In this pandemic time as we are about to have a blended limited face-to-face and modular
distance learning, these different kinds of leadership can be used depending on situations such skill be
required. But whatever may be used, leaders should have its basic objective that all that are under their
supervision can be heard. For them to be inspired, to contribute no matter how small there is as their
capabilities allowed and so everyone can participate to the success of such mission of making schools a
conducive way to learn along with precautions combatting the covid-19 virus.
