THEORY
In tne experiment a mass M is attached at one end of the
string of length h and the
string is wound on the axle of
the flywheel. The mass falls downwards freely
under the force due to
gravity, which supplies energy to the flywheel, and it starts
rotating. If the mass traverses a height'h' before its fall, its initial
potential energy
"Mgh" is used up in the following three ways.
(a) A part is used up in providing kinetic
energy 1/2 mv2 to the descending mass
where V is the velocity of mass when the
string detaches from the axle.
(b) Another part is used up in providing kinetic energy of rotation 1/2 I
wheel where T' is the moment of inertia of the o to the
flywheel about its own axis
and o is the angular velocity of the
flywheel.
(c) A part of energy is used up in doing work against the fractional force
between
the disc and ball bearings. If E is the
energy wasted in one rotation due tob
friction and n, is the number of revolutions made
by wheel before the strigs
detaches from the axle then the total energy used
up in doing work against
the frictional forces will be n1E.
Thus at the instant when the string detaches from
the axle by the law of
conservation of energy.
Potential energy of body (mass) is converted into rotational
kinetic energy of
flywheel and translational kinetic of suspended mass so that

m gh (m() 14

PROCEDURE
Fist measure the radius of the axle with the help of vernier callipers. A string in
then wound on the axie, one end of which is fixed to the axle and a mass is
Suspended from the other end. Fly wheel is held by hand to prevent rotation.
Nurmber of (turns) of the string on the axle is counted if the fiy wheel is now
reteased, it rotates as the mass moves down wards. It continues to rotate even
after the mass leaves the axle. Number of these rotations (na) are counted and
time period 'r for these rotations is noted with the help of stopwatch. Repeat the
above observation with four different mass m.

NOTE
As the value of 'm' increases the number of turns 'n' of the string wound on the
axle should be roduced so that n, may not become very large.

PRECAUTIONS
1. EXtrd care must be taken to start and stop the stopwatch immediately as the

string leaves the axle.

2.
2 The friction at the bearing should be avoided.
3. Fractional value of rotation be avoided by adjusting vertical height h.
