Paragraph Writing: Basics

After learning about the elements of a sentence in Academic File 1, you can learn how to
write a good paragraph. Well-written paragraphs are very important in any kind of
academic writing, such as essays or reviews.

First, let’s consider the key features of a paragraph, i.e., what makes a good paragraph.

Key features of a paragraph

A paragraph is like a hamburger: It has three parts. Look at the picture.

Topic sentence  Introduces the subject of the paragraph,


i.e., what the paragraph is about.

Supporting sentences  Give more information or details


about the topic sentence.

The concluding sentence  summarizes the content of the


paragraph and can express a recommendation.

All the members of my family have a career that involves science. my father works
as an IT analyst in a multi-national company. Careers are very important in a person’s
