The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

COVID-19 has a major impact on all aspects of our life and society. Higher

education in tourism, events, and hospitality must adapt to the present pandemic's

changes by moving away from traditional classroom settings and online classes. Many

parts of the student learning environment are affected by this transformation, particularly

courses that include field experiences, such as student internship programs.

As the tourist and hospitality business expands at a breakneck pace, so does the

demand for highly trained and experienced individuals (Gailliard, 2010; Jack, Stansbie, &

Sciarini, 2017). Recruiters in the industry today are searching for graduates with talents

that go beyond a university diploma. While most graduates are well-prepared in terms of

employment knowledge, many lack the necessary job skills (Gursoy, Rahman, &

Swanger, 2012). Educators must collaborate with the industry to identify skilled

graduates who will serve as future industry giants (Jack, Stansbie, & Sciarini, 2017).

Several academic courses now include mandatory student internships to supplement

traditional classroom learning. 

Internships allow students to get experience outside of the classroom (Zopiatis &

Constanti, 2007), apply classroom theories, and reflect on their career prospects (Tse,

2010). Internships provide students a taste of what it's like to work for a company and

give them the opportunity and chances to gain practical skills through hands-on
experience and networking (Collins, 2002). Interns in tourism and hospitality play a

significant role in meeting the industry's labor demands. The Tourism and Hospitality

Management (THM) and Hotel Management (HM) programs are on the cutting edge of

ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for top-level professions. These internship

programs strive to combine theory and practical practice through experiential learning. 

As stated by Batik (2020), the world's economy was shut down virtually instantly

due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Thus, social alienation, stay-at-home orders, and travel

and mobility restrictions harm the [hospitality] industry is advised. Gursoy and Chi

(2020) gave insight into guests' now-accepted impressions of travel, restaurant meals, and

hotel stays. The results of Gursoy and Chi's poll are shocking, and they corroborate

mounting concerns that the hospitality industry may not fully rebound anytime soon, if at

all (Gursoy & Chi, 2020).

Formal education, according to Dib, C. Z. (1988), follows a systematic, organized

form of education that is structured and managed in line with a set of laws and norms in

terms of aims, content, and technique, they provide a very rigorous curriculum. Formal

education facilities are structured administratively, geographically, and circularly, with

students required to attend a minimum number of classes. Teachers and students must

both observe a program that includes intermediate and final evaluations to progress pupils

to the next learning level.

Since internships became a required component of the curriculum, tourism,

events, and hospitality programs have worked hard to improve student's quality of the

internship experience. On the other hand, universities have little choice due to the

COVID-19 epidemic. Many colleges and universities had to adapt to virtual internships
swiftly. On the other hand, virtual internships are poorly understood, with little empirical

data available. Many questions remain unsolved, such as whether virtual internships offer

students the same level of learning and happiness as on-site internships. To enhance

student learning experience and satisfaction, how should remote and virtual internships

be structured? What conditions must the hosting organization meet for student interns to

work remotely? Do different assessment requirements for student learning outcomes

apply to virtual internships?


Background of the Study

In the Philippines' Central Visayas region, Lapu-Lapu Metropolis is a first-class,

highly urbanized city. It is one of the cities that make up the Philippines' Metro Cebu. It

is one of the cities that make up the Philippines' Metro Cebu. The Mactan canal divides it

from Cebu province, although two bridges connect the first Mandaue Mactan bridge and

the Marcelo Fernand Bridge. The hospitality industry is one of the most valuable,

contributing significantly to global GDP daily. In today's world of the ever-increasing

globalization of services and brands, service-oriented firms must impress their clients

domestically and internationally while overcoming cultural differences. The global

market is influenced by development, industry, potential, and recreational activities.

The COVID-19 pandemic has swept the globe. Every government strives to

combat the pandemic virus, and many countries have declared total lockdown. Schools

and institutions help children develop social skills and awareness, interrupted by the

COVID-19 lockdown. It has influenced not just the academics of the pupils, but also their

industrial training. Students in the hospitality business require strong communication

skills, social values, collaboration, and a variety of other traits that have been influenced

by the epidemic but cannot be learnt through internet programs. 

Many of the students were unable to attend virtual classes due to a poor network

in their area, a lack of attention and desire, a lack of space in their home for online studies

due to the addition of family members, and a lack of a system to manage extra online
lessons. The pandemic influenced hospitality students' internships, as their internship

programs were either reduced or discontinued because of the pandemic.

This academic paper aims to investigate the elements that influence student

performance during hotel management internship learning experiences at the multi-

cultural University of Cebu Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue. In this study of student reflections

and internship staff facilitation, the factors contributing to student achievement with their

working and learning experiences will be determined. This research comprised students

obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management. The proposed study has

practical implications for academics, sponsors, and industry experts interested in learning

more about student internship performance. It also serves as a framework for future

hospitality practitioners at the University of Cebu Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue to have

successful internship experiences.

Social learning theory, proposed by Albert Bandura, emphasizes the importance

of observing, modelling, and imitating the behaviors, attitudes, and emotional reactions

of others. Social learning theory considers how both environmental and cognitive factors

interact to influence human learning and behavior. It is for this reason that Bandura

modified his theory and in 1986 renamed his Social Learning Theory, Social Cognitive

Theory (SCT), as a better description of how we learn from our social experiences. Social

learning theory arise from their commitment to the environment as the chief influence on

behavior. It is limiting to describe behavior solely in terms of either nature or nurture and

attempts to do this underestimate the complexity of human behavior. It is more likely that

behavior is due to an interaction between nature (biology) and nurture (environment).


Social Learning Theory concepts and training methods were judged to be quite feasible

for application to on-the-job training.

Statement of the Problem

This study determines the Lived Experience of BSHM Practicum Trainees in

Housekeeping Amidst Pandemic in University of Cebu Lapu-Lapu Mandaue during

2021-2022 as basis for action plan. 

Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What are the lived experience of BSHM practicum trainees in housekeeping amidst

pandemic in terms of:

1.1 personal experience;

1.2 training program; and

1.3 trainee empowerment?

2 What are the common problems encountered by BSHM practicum trainees on their

live experience in housekeeping amidst pandemic?

3 What are the interventions taken by the respondents in these experiences?

4 Based on the findings of the study, what action plan may be prosed?

            

          

        Significance of the Study


This study will be beneficial to the following: 

Practicum Trainees. The Lived Experience of BSHM Practicum Trainees in

Housekeeping During the Pandemic is the focus of this study. The New Normal

practicum system might have a significant impact on practicums.

School Administration. The findings of this study can help the school administrations to

find for a better company to accommodate their interns with a quality program.

Researchers. The outcomes of the study can aid researchers in assessing business

operations. The management will take corrective action in terms of the environment.

Future Researchers. The outcomes of this study may be relevant to other researchers

interested in how practicum trainees will be trained in any service-oriented organization.

Other researchers will be motivated to conduct comparable studies with a broader scope

and to include variables not included in this study.

Research Locale

In 2022, a research study will be conducted in the city of Lapu-Lapu. There were

thirty barangays in the area. The Philippines' first heavily urbanized city is in the Central

Visayas region. The town's current name was given when it was renamed in 1961 after

being known as Opon. It is one of the cities that make up the Philippines' Metro Cebu. It

is administratively separate from the rest of Cebu, although the Philippine Statistics

Authority classifies it as part of Cebu (PSA).

The municipality of Lapu-Lapu covers the majority of the two islands, Mactan

Island, and the smaller Olango Island. The rest of both islands are in Cordova, a tiny city

to the south, and both cities have a few smaller islands. In local vernacular, the city's
center is called Lapu-Lapu or Mactan. Mactan is a small island off the coast of Mandaue

with two bridges connecting it to the mainland, both of which lead to downtown Lapu-

Lapu. Olango is accessible by ferry from Mactan.

Based on the 2021 census, it has a population of 993,744 people and it is one of

the cities which makes Metro Cebu in the Philippines. Geographically, it is in Cebu

Province. It is, however, dealt with separately from the section. Cebu City is a part of it.

The city is on Mactan Island, only a few kilometers from Cebu's main island. To the 17th

southeast, it includes the Olango Island Group and a few smaller islets. The city is

connected to Mandaue City on Cebu's mainland via the Mactan-Mandaue Bridge and the

Marcelo Fernan Bridge. Mactan-Cebu International Airport, the country's second busiest

airport, is in Lapu-Lapu City.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study is limited to the BSHM Practicum Trainees in Housekeeping at

University of Cebu Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue. The focus of this study is to know the lived

experiences of the Practicum Trainees Amidst Pandemic. The main objectives of this

study are the following;

 To emphasize the way of living and daily routine of BSHM Practicum Trainees in

Housekeeping Amidst the Pandemic. 

 To support resolving issues relating to the challenges faced by Practicum Trainees

in Housekeeping in connection with the current situation, pandemic.


Definition of Terms:

To fully understand the study, the following terms are defined operationally.

BSHM Practicum Trainees.  Serves as the subject in this research paper wherein, 4 th

year college students called as Practicum Trainees under the program BSHM at

University of Cebu Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue.

Lived Experiences. A visualization and understanding on the subject, its choices, and

possibilities, as well as how these elements influence one's knowledge perception.

Pandemic. A disease outbreak that affects many people and spreads across several

countries. It is used in this study to explain the existing situation.

CHAPTER II

Review of Related Literature and Related Studies

This chapter presents the related review of literature and studies that the researchers

considered in strengthening the importance of the study. 

Keeping in view, the importance of related studies and realizing the inevitability and

purpose of the survey of related literature, the researcher glanced into the literature concerning

the different aspects of the study. Related studies have been categorized under specific concern
and purpose of the present study. The present literature review is organized accordingly, in a way

that this goes along with the outset of the study. 

According to Carreers (2022) Internships are often work experiences provided by

employers to give students and graduates a glimpse of the work environment in a particular

industry related to their field of study. Internships provide real insight into the world of work, 

build on the theory  learned at university, and help you acquire practical skills to strengthen your

resume and increase employment. Internships provide the opportunity to test your skills in real-

life situations, explore  career options, and gain insights into your organization and career path.

Internships have long been viewed to connect classroom theory with the real world in the

hospitality, events, and tourism industries. Experiential learning through internships has provided

the ability for students to blend classroom learnings with real world experiences prior to their

graduation to help them better prepare for their future and have a greater chance to succeed in

their job (Chang & Chu, 2009). (Chang & Chu, 2009). Students who struggle to transfer from the

classroom to the workplace can benefit from supervised internship experiences that rapidly

acclimate students to the actual world (Chang & Chu, 2009; Le Maistre & Paré, 2004).

Internships provide insight into the internal mechanics of the selected industry. You can

look behind the scenes and experience the specific knowledge and daily work required for each

job. Trained professionals have the advantage of being able to perform tasks that they have

otherwise read, and have the opportunity to try the tasks themselves. The scope of doing this

depends on your area of expertise.  But after the internship, you can't expect sophisticated, fully

competent reporters, bankers, graphic designers, pharmacists, ergotherapists and more.

Especially as a virtual intern, I cannot get enough  practical experience at a high level for that

purpose. All you  do is learn how to become a professional. Margaret Stacey Duffy, Assistant
Director of Career Development at North Central College, points out common skills developed

in the internship. These are what the National College of Employers Association  (NACE) calls 

eight career readiness: career and self-development, communication, critical thinking, fairness

and inclusiveness, leadership, professionalism, teamwork, and technology. is.  These skills

roughly define what you need to  succeed in a professional environment. Whether you're in the

field or doing a virtual internship, you need to acquire these skills. Being a college student

around a full-time employee helps you understand and understand how you can support yourself,

be accountable to your colleagues, and make a valuable contribution in any workplace situation.

Imm (2021)

Internships not only assist students in achieving higher order learning goals, but they also

provide additional learning benefits such as improved topic knowledge that leads to increased

academic accomplishment, the development of networking skills, and the provision of a set of

skills. Bukaliya, 2012; Celio et al., 2011; Knouse & Fontenot, 2008; Kurthakoti & Good, 2019;

Simons et al., 2012; Warren, 2012; Warren, 2012)

Internship program success has been measured in several ways. The most frequent

methods (Kurthakoti & Good, 2019) are self-reported satisfaction surveys by internship

participants and site supervisors. Ash and Clayton (2009) argued that identifying the desired

learning outcomes and incorporating assessment into the reflection process is crucial. The

educational institution isn't the only one who creates internship programs for the industry. The

institution and business partners must work together to establish an internship program that

ensures student learning outcomes are both academically rigorous and industry-relevant

(Anderson & Sanga, 2019).


In the article “ Hospitality Internship- Housekeeping” released by Pic Management, it is

mentioned that housekeeping  internships  are a great variety of activities. Duties include

anything that can support the duties of the hotel governor. Tasks may vary as the main goal is to

provide the best possible service  to customers and  hotel guests. From receptions to  cleaning

services, housekeepers need to interact and connect with all the actors in the hotel. An internship

as a domestic helper shows how important it is to pay attention to every detail in order to keep

our customers happy.

Customer happiness, according to Hansson (2020), is one of the most crucial aspects of

any organization. The customer is always right, as the phrase goes in the business world. While

any business's ultimate purpose is to make money, the best method to accomplish so is to take

care of the client. While many organizations try to save money by reducing customer service

resources, this just makes things more difficult for a company to expand this is because, to

reduce overhead costs, companies will forfeit consumer loyalty. In truth, it is vital that every

organization prioritizes client pleasure. There are a few key elements to remember to make this

happen.

 Rangan and Natarajarathinam (2014) theory determined a gap exists if interns cannot

perform well their assigned task. Interns and supervisors' expectations were frequently at odds,

resulting in negative experiences for both parties. Well-structured and planned internships would

be essential to minimizing this divergence. Good internships should have the following

characteristics: (1) tasks should be pre-planned before interviews; (2) interns should work in

various divisions or areas of the company; (3) tasks and objectives should be clearly defined and

challenging; (4) interns should be trained and provided with resources. the resources to perform
the duties; (5) interns should be held accountable; (6) supervisors should mentor and guide the

interns; (7) interns should be recognized and rewarded; (8) interns should work on meaningful

tasks rather than tasks that no one wants to do; and (9) they should be paid well.

Customers are the lifeblood of any business, so they must be handled as if they are the

King of the market. Customers are responsible for the organization's growth, profit, position, and

image, among other things. As a result, all businesses must meet all their consumers'

expectations in order to be considered satisfied.

Bin Saeed also contributes his understanding of the social and psychological factors that

determine job performance (Bin Saeed et al., 2019). Mindfulness as a technique for mental

balance is especially crucial in a pandemic situation to improve the employee's connection with

the business through remote employment (World Health Organization, 2020a, 2020b).

According to Coiro, Knobel, Lankshear, and Leu (2008), the entire world is becoming

susceptible to lethal diseases that know no boundaries, and their impact on humanities goes far

beyond direct health outcomes, affecting the economy and society, requiring a higher level of

preventive measures in every working personnel.

A student must first select whether to undertake a virtual internship. a personal evaluation

to determine whether they are a suitable fit for this type of learning environment Some of the

things the student should consider are their computer skills and their capacity to use or learn

digital technologies. They must also be self-disciplined and possess the necessary skills while

working individually, the ability to manage their time and prioritize their duties. Students should

consider carefully what they hope to gain from their internship experience. If they are truly
interested in a virtual internship may not suit them well if they have previous experience being

physically connected with people and having a more personal touch experience.

Virtual internships allow students to develop talents that they might not have had the

opportunity to develop in a traditional setting. If the student is interested in learning these unique

technology abilities, the virtual internship would be a suitable fit. It is recommended that virtual

internship sites provide resources such as equipment, interns should be aware that they may be

required to bring their own equipment and will most likely require a conducive working

environment with decent internet access and a quiet, distraction-free location.

There will continue to be numerous opportunities to successfully work remotely on the

planning, coordination, marketing, and client meetings/communications for various work

projects in some industrial sectors, particularly in events management and travel/tourism. In

many circumstances, all the planning and preparation work can be completed quickly. After that,

the employee would need to be on location for client meetings, venue tours, and event execution

on the day of the event. These industries that host virtual internships will be affected by the

future work model.

Time and again, organizational environments are subject to dreadful upheavals resulting

in unexpected and widespread changes that interrupt whole sectors, overwhelm vigorous

companies' adaptive capacity, and surpass the grasp of highly experienced business

administrators. And such drastic changes require immediate entrepreneurial responses. Firms

must create ways to deal with short-term disruptions and extensive unpredictability amid the

current Covid-19 epidemic to survive. As stated by Ahlstrom (2020), longer-term strategy

modifications may be necessary to navigate the competitive landscape generated by technical,

socio-political, and institutional changes in the 'New Normal' after the pandemic has passed.
Because the pandemic shock has sparked another unanticipated dynamic, this New

Normal is unlikely to be a static equilibrium. We are living in an era of innovative symmetry

where after major disruptions humans continue to manage a living and move on.  While it is

uncertain which changes carried on by the pandemic will persevere, it is certainly possible that

the present crisis will impact several aspects of the business environment not until the cure will

be developed. 

This new environment (during and after the epidemic) begs the question, "How can

strategic management theory assist us to comprehend how hoteliers may navigate the New

Normal?" according to Hitt, Arregle, and Holmes Jr.'s combined recent research. 

Related Studies

One study of (Dani,2020) entitled Impact of Covid 19 on education and internships of

hospitality students found out that most of the students face a variety of  problems with their

online courses and their internship programs are badly affected due to this pandemic. Hence, this

affects their learning and skill development activities, but the good news is that most students

garnered  full support from their educators and universities and most  students chose online mode

of learning  as a useful tool especially during this pandemic. However, a greater number of 

students prefer the traditional  mode of learning or face-to-face class than online  education.

In connection this study talks about the various impact of the Covid-19 pandemic in the

country of India especially in the education aspect. The provided study may stand as one of the

supporting evidence or reference to establish a concrete details of this research. Base from the

fact that the result entails different phases of experiences from interns of hospitality and
management; positive and negative effects, this will provide an existing idea for the researchers

and latter be able to strengthen the gained data from the responses of local interns here in the

country..

A study of (Suastini et al., 2022) entitled The Perceptions of students, The Hospitality

and Tourism Industry, and Tourism Polytechnics on Internships during Covid 19 Pandemic

presented that the the Implementation of internships during pandemic may improve student focus

issues, institution-specific and organization-specific issues. But not all parties agree issuance of

compensation. Also, students and Hospitality Tourism Industry and University of Applied

Sciences agree that the institutions need to use of virtual internship. Stakeholders implementation

of virtual internship should be seen critically in light of the unforeseen end COVID-19 Pandemic

and transition to the new normal. However, if you look closely it becomes clear the the tourism

universities opinions are divided on whether virtual internships will equip students have practical

skills to improve student attitudes and will properly prepare students to address real-life

challenges in the service, hospitality and tourism industry.

In relation to Suastini`s study on the Implementation of internships during pandemic, it

reveals the sudden shift of perspectives not just coming from the students of Hospitality

Management but also for the teachers. Which it adheres the relevance of allowing students to

experience internship even with the pandemic. Hence, it can be inferred that deciding whether

going virtual or the traditional training may bring a ripple effect to its students. The ununified

perception may lead to consequences and may allow students to experience different

experiences. The aforementioned information can serve as one of the bases of this research.

A study of (Cortez et al., 2021) entitled Factors Affecting Tourism and Hospitality Student`s

Behavior and Their Adaptation Level on Online Learning Approach of LPU-Laguna shows that
distance learning have a favorable impact on the personalities of the students, there is worry

despite one`s beliefs, disposition, and interests. Learning environments, resources and methods

of instruction show that they strongly concur that these elements have a favorable impact on the

student conduct and level of online adaptibility learning. To the contrary, the quantitiy of the

factor information has a negative impact on kids` conduct, such as putting off making a decision.

Additionally, the majority of the learners adjust to different learning methods with ease.

LPULaguna imposes (synchronous and asynchronous), yet they still experience communication

issues with their teacher.

Relating to the presented local study, it can be inferred that the pandemic allow

institutions to opt in another alternative in teaching the hospitality students. The sudden change

resulted to numerous effects and  gave BSHM students rising issues. Hence, affected not just

theirselves but the way they acquire the necessary skills needed for their course. As the

universities chose a new learning approach, it may entail another experience for each hospitality

student. The study serves as one of the bases that will support the possible responses from the

chosen respondents. 
CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter concentrates on the discussion of the research methods and procedures
adhered to by the researcher order to answer systematically the specific problems posed for the
investigation. Specifically, the research method, population and samples, respondents, sampling
design, inclusion and exclusion criteria, research instrument, data gathering procedures, and
statistical treatment of the data used for the accurate data analysis and interpretation are
explained in this chapter.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The study utilized the Phenomenological type of research which it aims to determine the
actual experiences of practicum trainees from University of Cebu, Lapu – Lapu and Mandaue in
Housekeeping in some area of Cebu, Hotels and Resorts amidts the Global Pandemic. It will also
adhere to know their experiences in training grounds and common problems encountered by the
BSHM practicum trainees in the specific job designation.

The respondents of the study will be the HM graduating students who are done with their

OJT practicum in different hotels and resorts and was assigned in the housekeeping department.

The sample size is set at 15 HM students.

Sampling Design

The researcher makes use of the purposive sampling design to answer the research

questions. The technique is used to convey information from the study. This will be achieved by

the researchers by asking the graduates and graduating students to take in the study and to
answer the question by asking and filling up the questionnaire in the type of “Google Form”.

This kind of sample is selected to gather information regarding the study.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The study will use research made questionnaire which consists of five open ended

questions for the respondents to answer.

In this case, the research will know the specific answers that the respondent can fulfill in

order to associate them what is their struggles regarding on their situation as a practicum trainee

in their specific job allocations. In that way, everyone will be aware, especially for trainees and

some of the business and hotel staff and trainees and as well as the school can adjust and make

an appropriate action regarding to the problems or experiences indicated by the students’

response.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

This research has taken the following procedure. First, a letter of request to conduct the

study will be prepared. The researcher will secure, approve written permission from the

administration of UCLM. After being given permission, the researcher will make an open ended

questionnaire, validated by the professor of the subject. Hence, due to the restrictions caused by

the pandemic, and to ensure safety and to follow the protocol. The researchers have decided to

gather the data through: (a)questionnaire will be distributed through Google form. (b) by using

the social media platform. The researcher will make use the power of social media, through

posting the questionnaire together with the inclusion and exclusion criteria and the instrument

will be given either messenger or their email. The researchers will clarify some terms to
respondents so that the respondents can answer the questionnaire with full knowledge of their

responsibility as the subject of the Study.

After the gathering of answers from the chosen respondents, the response will be

tabulated, analyze and explain accordingly to the result of the data interpretations. The answers

will be categories and will be explain further base on the codes and themes result in the

analyzation of answers. All answered questionnaires and electronic or soft copies of the

questionnaires will be destroyed and deleted once the study is completed.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF DATA

The study uses Thematic Content Analysis in which researchers establish themes in the

result of the interview. The researcher examines and analyze the subject in the research though

out the observation and interview towards the respondents in which are the BSHM trainees and

their experiences in Housekeeping. The result will be analyze accordingly to the codes,

categories and themes and will be explained through out the discussed evidence and findings.
