What I learned about tobacco and alcohol consumption while watching the two videos, Smoking tobacco
influences lung wellbeing in light of the fact that an individual takes in nicotine as well as an
assortment of extra synthetic substances. Tobacco's harmful effects are in the future, not now.
Smoking mainly harms your future self, and it is human nature to discount and disregard the future.
Young people may smoke for years with no visible health effects. But it eventually catches up to you,
especially in your 40's and 50's. No one ever died from smoking one cigarette, but many have died
from smoking millions of them. Eventually, the future becomes the present, along with the
consequences of past behaviour. Tobacco is the most addictive substance known to man. Once you
are addicted, it is terribly difficult to quit. As Mark Twain said, “To stop smoking is easy. I ought to
know. I've done it a thousand times.” People may say, “I'll just stop smoking before I get addicted.”
But addiction is established before you know it. Smoking actually changes your brain, making
nicotine part of your neurochemistry. It's like a fish hook - it goes in very easily but getting it out is
painful and difficult. The tobacco industry is well aware of all of the above, and they are not your
friend. They have their own interests in mind, not yours. Consuming alcohol occasionally is slightly
bad. Consuming more is worse. Consuming lots is very bad. There’s presumably some level of
alcohol consumption where the impact on your health is so low that it’s more or less imperceptible.
Finding that point, and keeping to it, is the trick. Particularly since some percentage of the
population, under some circumstances, are likely to lose control of their drinking, and then it
becomes a real problem.
