Roldan: Sir R and sir Mike, I have a question to the both you, since today we are
celebrating valentines day, do you know how to play musical instruments?
Because basically it is a way of showing love or expressing of feelings towards
our loved ones not only to our special someone.. such as playing guitar and etc.
RR: Yes sir Roldan, I know to play…
Mike: Me too sir…
Roldan: Good for the both of you sir R and sir Mike…Because our topic for this
afternoon is all about MUSIC INSTRUMENTS used by Filipinos here in the
Philippines.
RR: Yes sir Roldan, And did you know learners? That the Bamboo Organ of St.
Joseph Parish Church in Las Piñas, Metro Manila was the oldest Bamboo organ in
the Philippines? It was constructed in 1824 after 8 years with 1,031 pipes, 902 of
which are made of native bamboo. And up to now it is still visible to the public,
So learners, if could happen to visit in Metro Manila make sure you see this
unique music instrument.
Roldan: That’s right sir R, so now learners as you can see in the screen, we will
going unlock what are the different musical instruments used by Filipinos, so the
first one is…1. The flat gong commonly known as Gangsa ►it is played by the
groups in the Cordillera region of the bossed gongs played among the Islam and
animist groups in the Southern Philippines. Animism is the belief that objects,
places, and creatures all possess a distinct spiritual essence. Potentially, animism
perceives all things—animals, plants, rocks, rivers, and others related to are
alive.
Mike: 2. Next is the so called Solibao ►it is a hallow wooden Igorot drug topped
with pig skin or lizard skin this is played by striking the drum head using the palm
of the hand.
RR: Another music instrument is 3. Tongatong► related to bamboo organ it is a
bamboo percussion instrument used by the people of Kalinga to communicate
with spirits during house blessings. It is made of bamboo cut in various lengths.
When you hit it against soft earth a certain drone reverberates though the
instrument’s open mouth. When an entire set of Tongatong is played in
interloping rhythm and prolonged with the tribal chanting, it could put the
audience and the dancers in a trance.
Roldan: 4. Diwdiw-asis ► 5 or more different size of slender bamboo that is tied
together
RR: 5. Saggeypo ► is a bamboo pipe that is closed on one end by a node with the
open end held against the lower lip of the player as he blows directly across the
top. The pipe can be played individually by one person or in ensembles of three
or more.
Mike: 6. Bungkaka (Bamboo buzzer) ►A bungkaka, also known as the bamboo
buzzer is a percussion instrument (idiophone) made out of bamboo common in
numerous indigenous tribes around the Philippines such as the Ifugao, Kalinga,
and Ibaloi.
RR: 7. Kulintang ► refers to a racked gong chime instrument played in the
southern islands of the Philippines, along with its varied accompanying
ensembles.
Mike: 8. Rondalla ► is performed on ensembles comprising mandolin
instruments of various sizes called banduria composed on the Iberian tradition.
Roldan: Okay sir R and Sir Mike those are the music intruments used by Filipinos,
and if there’s an music instruments of course there’s also songs played by
Filipinos, to name the first one is…
SONGS PLAYED BY FILIPINOS
RR: a. OPM (Original Pilipino Music) - originally referred only to Philippine pop
songs, particularly ballad. OPM”? Original Pilipino Music, now more commonly
known as Original Pinoy Music, Original Philippine Music or OPM for short,
originally referred to Philippine pop songs, particularly ballads, that were
popular in the Philippines during the late 70s to the present. About 80% of
Filipino songs in the English language are about love. According to surveys, the
Philippines is one of the countries where love and companionship are
prominent.
Roldan: I agree with you sir R, because Filipinos are the type of people who
would always look for songs that relate to their lives. They are obsessed with a
certain romantic feeling, which occupies the whole entertainment and media
industries in the Philippines.
RR: Which among these OPM songs is your most favorite? Sir Mike and Sir
Roldan?· "Buwan" · "Kahit Ayaw Mo Na" · "Kung 'Di Rin Lang Ikaw" · "Kathang
Isip" · "Sana" · "Di Na Muli"and many more..
Mike: Right sir R, and another type of song is..b. Indigenous Music - a term for
the traditional music of the indigenous people, that is the music of an original
ethnic group living in the Philippines.
Ex: Gong Music
Roldan: Yes sir Mike and the last type of music is…c. Hispanic – influenced music
– Spain ruled the Philippines for 333 years and Hispanic influence in Filipino
culture is found everywhere.
Ex: Rondalla, Harana & Kundiman.
So learners, among indigenous Filipinos, one important function of music is to
celebrate or commemorate important events in the human life cycle. ... They
serve as a reminder of the Filipinos' long history of musical talent and ingenuity.

RR: So now learners, you already know that the Original Pilipino Music (OPM) is
another term for Filipino Pop Music. Describing our own Filipino instruments
played especially in the Cordillera region and Southernmost region in Mindanao
serve as our own identity of enriching our culture and traditions. Art forms
usually appeals to the sense of seeing and hearing.

Roldan: Philippine contemporary art is part of culture. And of course learners, as

a viewer, you gain a deeper knowledge about what the contemporary Filipino
artists do or did, and why and how they do or have done it. In doing so, you get
to develop appreciation and gratitude for their artistic endeavors.
Today, most Filipino contemporary arts still deal with current concerns that
affect our country. It provide ways to allow the audience to participate in the
experience. And also it acknowledge the Filipino originality by using native and
indigenous materials in their artwork which show a growing sense of pride in
being Filipino.
Mike: That’s right sir Roldan, so this time learners lets proceed now to our
