Q. A box shaped vessel has length, 100m breadth 8m and ius floating at a draft of 6m with
KG 3.2m. A midship side compartment length 9m, breadth 3m is bilged. Find the resulting
list.

P or S tank from C/L. One compartment is bilged

Q. A box vessel has length 180m, breadth 16m is floating at draft, 10m with KG 6.5m. Find
the list if a compartment midships length 10m with longitudinal bulkheads on the centreline
and 4m to port of the centreline is bilged.
With liquid in tank
Q.1 A box shaped vessel 200mx 30m floating at an even keel draught of 8m in SW has a midship
tank 40m long extending the full width of the vessel. Below the tank is a 3m high tank which is empty.
The main tank above the DB tank contains oil of RD 0.8 to a sounding of 15 mtrs. The initial KG 7.5m.
Find the new drafts F & A and GMT after the tank carrying oil is bilged above the watertight flat.

Solution:

Displacement = U/V x RD sw = 200 x 30 x 8 x 1.025 = 49200t

Wt. Of lost buoyancy =Lost volume x RD sw = [ 40 x 30 x (8-3) x 1.025 ] = 6150t

Wt of Oil in tank = Volume of oil x RD of oil = (40 x 30 x 15 x 0.8) = 14400t

(Rise as wt of liquid lost > wt of lost buoyancy)

Rise = (wt of liquid lost ~ wt of lost buoyancy )

(RD of water in which vsl is floating) x (Intact WPA)
= (14400 ~ 6150) / [ 1.025 x (160 x 30 ) ] = 1.677m

Final mean draft = 8 -1.677 = 6.323m = Final drafts F & A

To Find Final KG
Remarks Wt KG V.Moments
Ship 49200 7.5 369000
Oil - 14400 10.5 -151200
Final W = 34800 F.V.M= 217800

Final KG = F.V.Moments / Final W = 217800 / 34800 = 6.259m

Final Volume = Final W / density sw = 34800 / 1.025 = 33951.2m³

To Find Final KB
V1 = L x B x new Mean draft = 200 x 30 x 6.323 = 37938 m³
KB1 = ½ new mean draft = ½ x 6.323 = 3.1615m

v1 = length of tank x B x (new mean draft - Ht of flat) = 40 x 30 x (6.323 -3) = 3987.6m³

kb1 = ht of flat – [ ½ (new mean draft – ht of flat) ] = 3 + ( ½ 3.323) = 4.6615m

Volume KB Moments
37938 3.1615 119941
– 3987.6 4.6615 - 18588.2
33950.4 101352.8

Final KB = F.Moments / Final Volume = 101352.8 / 33950.4 = 2.985m

To Find Final BMT

Final BMT = Intact I / Final Volume = [ ( Intact L) B³ ] / (12 x Final volume)
= (160x 30³) / (12 x 33951.2) = 10.603m

Final KMT = Final KB + Final BMT = 2.985 + 10.603 = 13.588m

GMT = Final KMT – Final KG = 13.588 – 6.259 = 7.329m

Final drafts F & A = 6.323m

Q.2 A box shaped vessel of length 190 x 25m has a midship tank of length 15m, breadth 25m, 2mtrs
deep and full of SW. Vessels KG 8.885m. Calculate the vessels GM & drafts after the tank is bilged if
the initial even keel draft was 8m in SW.

Solution:

Displacement = U/V x RD sw = 190 x 25 x 8 x 1.025 = 38950t

Wt. Of lost buoyancy =Lost volume x RD sw = [ 15 x 25 x 2 x 1.025 ] = 768.8t

Wt of Oil in tank = Volume of oil x RD of oil = [ 15 x 25 x 2 x 1.025 ] = 768.8t

(wt of liquid lost = wt of lost buoyancy) no change in drafts.

Final KG = F.V.Moments / Final W = 345302 / 38181.2 = 9.044m

Final Volume = Final W / density sw = 38181.2 / 1.025 = 37250m³

To Find Final KB
V1 = L x B x draft = 190 x 25 x 8 = 38000 m³
KB1 = ½ draft = ½ x 8 = 4.0m

v1 = length of tank x B x Ht of DB tank = 15 x 25 x 2 = 750m³

– 750 1.0 - 750
37250 151250

Final KB = F.Moments / Final Volume = 151250 / 37250 = 4.060m

To Find Final BMT

Final BMT = I / Final Volume = [ L B³ ] / (12 x Final volume)

Final KMT = Final KB + Final BMT = 4.060 + 6.641 = 10.701m

GMT = Final KMT – Final KG = 10.701 – 9.044 =1.657m

Final drafts F & A = 8.000m
