TERM PROJECT I
Deadline: November 18th, Friday, 23:59 (Submissions will be done through Moodle –
hadi.hacettepe.edu.tr)
Description
In this project, you will investigate the funnel flow as shown in Figure below. At time = 0, the
funnel is filled with water at 𝐻𝑜 meters. Then plug with a diameter of 𝐷𝑜 is removed to allow
the water to run out. The funnel has to be emptied after 4 minutes from plug removal.

Diameter of 𝐷𝑜
a) Determine the initial height with respect to funnel angle 𝜃 using large tank assumption.
Plot the results from 𝜃=0° to 𝜃=90° with an increment of 1° degree. Discuss the effects
of cone angle on initial height.
b) Plot the water height from initial time to final removing time (t=4 minutes) for 𝜃=30°,
𝜃=45°, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝜃=60° on the same figure (using large tank assumption).Discuss the effects
on funnel angle on water removal rate.
c) If the diameter of 𝐷𝑜 is changed to 𝐷𝑓 , calculate the water height from the initial time
to the final removing time at 𝜃=30°. Plot the previous diameter ( 𝐷𝑜 ) results that you
completed in Part B and the current one (𝐷𝑓 ) on the same figure.

d) In this part, the large tank assumption is not valid. Derive the new differential equation
in full form and try to solve it numerically. (You can use MATLAB ode23, ode45 tools
but you can use other software toolboxes as well) . Then, choose one of the results from
Part B and compare its numerical solution. Discuss the effects of large tank assumption.
Is it always good assumption for every case or not ? Answer it using plots or examples.
Note: If you use MATLAB ode23 or ode45 tools, use the initial height results from Part
B as an initial condition.
