Digestive System Disorders

Teacher’s Input:
A stomach ache or belly ache can feel very uncomfortable, but it doesn't
always mean something is wrong with your stomach.
There are a lot of things that can cause pain in your belly. One example is
indigestion.

Indigestion is a condition in which you are not digesting your food correctly. If
you eat too much or eat something spicy or greasy, the food might be hard to
digest, which can make your stomach upset and cause pain.

While indigestion is not a health problem, there are several conditions where
your digestive system is not functioning properly. These conditions are called
Digestive System Disorders.
Write Digestive System Disorders on the board or display its flashcard.
Now explain disorder means something which is out of order or not working
properly. 20 minutes
This means if one of the organs involved in the digestive system is not working
properly, we are going through Digestive System Disorder.
Digestive System Disorders can affect our health and make us feel sick.
Two of the common Digestive System Disorders are
1. Constipation
2. Diarrhea

Constipation:
What does it mean?
It means passing hard, dry stools with difficulty or not being able to pass stool
at all. If you have less than 2 or 3 stools in a week, you are constipated.

How does it happen?

Our digestive system never stops working
During constipation, the rectum through which stool passes gets blocked.
Due to blocked rectum, stool gets stuck.

What causes Constipation?

- Not eating enough fiber foods like Apples, oatmeal, carrots, nuts, whole
grain food etc.
- Not drinking enough water
- Ignoring the need to pass stool or holding stool back
- Eating a lot of junk or processed food.
- Some medicines like Iron tablets.
Ask students if not drinking enough water and not taking enough fiber causes
constipation, what should we do to cure it?
Expected Response:
 Eat fiber-rich food
 Drink plenty of water
 Exercise
Consolidation:
Provide students with some questions and let them come up with remedies to prevent
constipation.

Questions.
Q1. Amir has difficulty passing stool which is causing him a lot of pain. What do you
think his doctor will suggest to help him feel better?
Q2. Eating ________ and ___________ can help with constipation.
15 mins
Conclude the lesson by telling students in worst case of Constipation, Dr sometimes
prescribes using medicines like laxatives.
Laxatives help in loosen stool so it can easily pass through rectum.
