Kinds of Eating Disorder:

1. Anorexia Nervosa -an eating disorder characterized by self-imposed starvation


leading to excessive weight loss.

Warning Signs and Symptoms:


- Dry skin - Fainting - Brittle hair - Dehydration
- Loss of body fat - Irregular heartbeat - Loss of menstruation
Social Causes of Anorexia Nervosa
• Perfectionistic personality.
• Difficulty communicating negative emotions.
• Difficulty resolving conflict.
• Low self-esteem.
• Maternal encouragement of weight loss and negatively expressed emotion
from the individual's mother.
2.Bulimia Nervosa- a disorder in which the clearing of digestive tract follows
cycles of overeating.

Characteristics

• Consuming an unusually large amount of food in a short period of time


(binge eating).
• Getting rid of the food (purging). Purging may involve making yourself
throw up (vomiting) or taking laxatives. Laxatives are medications that
speed up the movement of food through your body.
• Misuse of water pills (diuretics) or diet pills
• Eating very little or not at all (fasting).
• Excessively exercising.
• Hiding food to binge and purge later.

Warning Signs and Symptoms:


- Open sores in the mouth due to frequent vomiting
- Throats are often red
- Have tooth decay due to constant exposure to acids in their vomit
- Dehydration
3.Binge Eating Disorder- A severe, life-threatening, and treatable eating disorder
characterized by recurrent episodes of eating large quantities of food (often very
quickly and to the point of discomfort); a feeling of a loss of control during the
binge; experiencing shame, distress or guilt afterwards; and not regularly using
unhealthy compensatory measures (e.g., purging) to counter the binge eating.

Warning Signs and Symptoms :


-Lack of control once one begins to eat
- Grief - Anxiety - Shame - Depression
- Disgust or self-hatred about eating behaviors

Prevention and Intervention to Avoid Eating Disorders


✓ Avoid skipping meals
✓ Eat more high-fiber foods like fruits and vegetables
✓ Drink 8-10 glasses of water a day
✓ Do 30 minutes exercise daily
✓ Avoid finger foods and select meals that require eating at the table
✓ Cope with stress
✓ Have enough sleep
✓ Early treatment may be the best way to prevent the disorder
