Healthy Lifestyle Choice

What kind of lifestyle are you living right now? What kind of lifestyle do you think will you live five years
from now? Is it healthy or not? When we consider all the things that is happening with our society nowadays.
A healthy lifestyle is well balanced in terms of physical activity, healthy eating, relaxation, sleep and
personal hygiene. In addition, having a healthy lifestyle means you have weight control, good muscle tone,
improved lung capacity, better sleep patterns, a sense of well-being and more energy. Consequently, a healthy
lifestyle helps you prevent illness and enhance your wellness. Healthy lifestyle choices not only reduce your
risk of disease and disease-related death but also improve your wellness.
Four Factors that contributes to early death:
a) Health care system (9.8 %)
b) Human biology (16.4 %)
c) Environment (21.3 %)
d) Lifestyle (52.5%)
As you can read based on the percentages, lifestyle has the highest percentage among the factors that causes
early death.

Eating Habits
One of the most important tools available to help you select healthy food is the Nutrition Facts label found on
most food packages. This label gives you information about the food’s serving size and content, including
nutrients like carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals. The Nutrition Labeling and Education Act of
1990 in the United States mandated that most packaged food should have nutrition labeling, and that nutrient
content claims and approved health claims could also be placed in the food packaging.
There is no mandatory nutrition in the labeling requirement in the Philippines, however, practice nutrition
labeling. Such labels are often found at the back of the food. According to the Food and Nutrition Research
Institute (FNRI), a nutrition facts label on food packages must contain the following:
a) The serving size in both household and metric measures, which shows the amount of the product a
person actually eats
b) The amount of calories from the product
c) The amount of nutrients and their percent daily values (% DV); the % DV shows how food fits into
one’s overall daily needs

Types of Eating

1. Fuel for Performance

 This type of eating is usually associated with athletes, who not only plan their training regimens
but also their daily food intake so they can perform at optimum level during competition.
Athletes and people who regularly engage in high-intensity activities need to consume the right
kind and amount of food to ensure peak performance whenever necessary.
2. Emotional Eating
 Some people are either motivated or not motivated to eat depending on their mood. This type of
eating is commonly known as emotional eating. The following questions will help you determine
if you are affected by emotional eating:
a) Do you eat less or more when you feel sad?
b) Do you have preferred set of food to eat when you are happy?
c) Do you eat a lot or nothing at all when you sad? Happy? Nervous? Stressed?
d) How often do you end up eating rather than doing chores or assignments?
e) Do you associate food with good or bad memories? What are the kinds of foods that you
avoid because you associate them with unpleasant memories? What are the kinds of food you
associate with good memories?
f) Do you overeat when you are ecstatic or when you are depressed?

 If you answered “Yes” to four of the six questions, you have an inclination to eat or not eat
depending on your mood or emotion.
3. Social Eating
 Eating can be associated with and influenced by traditions. Generally, people associate eating
with celebrations, holidays, family gatherings, and religious traditions. There are a number of
festivals and celebrations in a year here in the Philippines. In one study, it was noted that
children’s food choices are influenced by social suggestion. In that the same study, it was
discovered that a child’s food choice is significantly affected by the influence of an older child, a
peer, or a fictional hero.
4. Eating Out of Habit or Recreational or Habitual Eating
 Eating nay also be associated with particular circumstances or sport events. Some people, even if
they are not hungry, eat snacks when they watch Tv or when they get home from work or school
because doing so has become a habit.

It is important to understand yourself, your eating habits, and food choices. It is just as important that
you identify the circumstances and emotions that prompt you to eat even when not necessary or the reasons why
you make unhealthy food choices. With such inner understanding and knowledge, you will be able to better
control your appetite, establish better, and healthier eating habits, and make healthy food choices.
