Lesson Plan
Prefixes and Suffixes
Summary
1. Subject(s): Addixes: Prefixes and Suffixes
2. Topic or Unit of Study: Phonics
3. Grade/Level: 2nd grade
4. Objective:
a. RF.2.3.d Identify, decode, and know the meaning of words with the most common
prefixes and derivational suffixes.

Implementation
Learning Context
This lesson will be a review of previous prefixes, and suffixes lessons taught earlier in the week. The
lesson can continue to understand the vocabulary and break down the new meaning of the new word.

Procedure
a. Anticipatory Set

I will introduce the lesson, leading into the following video, which includes a rap about prefixes and
suffixes. The video also serves as a reminder to what prefixes, suffixes, and root words are.

b. Direct Instruction

I will review the vocabulary using an anchor chart with large print and bold letters, so the students are
again reminded of vocabulary words. Specific vocabulary covered includes Addixes, Prefixes, Suffixes,
and Root Word.

c. Guided Practice

1
After asking my students if they have any questions, I will explain the worksheet’s instructions we are
about to complete. I will then do two prepared examples on the whiteboard using large letters, similar to
ones on the worksheet. I will incorporate hand motions and body movements when explaining if the word
has a prefix or suffix. If the example has a prefix, I will move the “beginning” of the word”( the right side
of the board). If the word has a suffix, I will move my body to the board’s left side near the word’s end.

d. Check for Understanding

I will ask the students if they have any questions, answering any questions they have about the two
examples or concepts overall. I will then use hand signals to gauge the student’s understanding
of the content. Students can show anywhere from five fingers to signal full understanding to
one finger to signal the least understanding. I will then know which students to bounce
around to provide further assistance.

e. Independent Practice

I would then let my two previous assigned helpers pass out the worksheet. They will then begin working
in either a small group (2 students) or individually. I would promote students working together but still
make it optional, reminding students of our classroom culture of helping others if they are confused and
need help.

f. Closing

After the worksheets, we will regroup every student and break down each word on the worksheet new
meaning, using examples in a sentences. I will conclude by again asking if they have any questions. I will
also praise the student for their effort and hard work.

Differentiated Instruction
a. Student #1( SLA with kindergarten reading level)
a. I would make sure that the student had access to higher performing students at the table.
The worksheet picked about does not include a written component, just circling prefixes
and suffixes. I would also go around the room, making sure this student could do the
worksheet with a peer.
b. Student #2( EBD)
a. I would play calming noise while the students are working to create a calm environment.
I would try to sit this student beside my desk to monitor behaviors more carefully and
observe triggers. I would make sure to clearly state the body’s sequence for these
students to know what is coming next. If the student starts to feel overwhelmed, they can
do a special spot called the “Safe Space” to calm down.
c. Student #3

2
a. I would also have this student sitting close to me, as the teacher. I would have sensory
devices available for this student. Calming music would also help this student. I would
observe this student so that I could notice triggers. The student has the option to work
individually. The option to wear our “calming” headphone would also be presented in
needed for this student.

Assessment
Collect worksheets to gauge the understanding of prefixes and suffixes. I would go through this
worksheets as a reference point of where each student is at with this content areas, to inform how to move
forward.
