EI. In the present note, a similar ap- proach for estimating the wave impact on the loading platform has been adopted. ‘Waves with the following characteristics will reach the loading platform (sus- pended deck structure), corresponding to a 10-years return period from North with the reduction from the outer breakwater (Ct = 0.78, see Appendix A for calculations) H.=Ct-3.7 m= 0.78-3.7m=2.9m! os Hoge © 1.8°2.9m=5.2m WL=+2.0mCD Estimate of crest elevation, CE: CE=2/3 + Hos = 3.5m. Crest level is thus 3.5 m-+2.0 m=+5.5 mCD. ‘The deck level +8,7 mCD means that beam sofffts are at +6.85 mCD which is above the crest level of +5.5 mCD. Therefore the wave will not directly hit the suspended deck structure. When the wave meets the slope it will be forced to break and the wave will run up the slope and hit onto the underside of the deck structure, No international guidelines exist for the calculation of the slamming foree for a wave run-up hit- ting the underside of the deck structure. ‘The run-up on a Jong uninterrupted slope with armour units would be in the order of maximum wave height, Ry = Hr. This means that solid water could reach a level of about +2.0m + 5.2m=+7.2 mCD if the primary armour (antifer cubes) were not stopped at +5.0 mCD. Although the soffit lies 35 om lower than the run-up level, the presence of the vent hole between the crest level of antifer cubes at +5.0 mCD and the soffit level at +6.85 mCD will dissipate the ' Etmay be noted thet the wave height from & is similar in size for a 10-year R.P. event ocanens and Sopa DocacenLN@ Ba SCeneheten GuPPONT Input On Fier Mess nsLonseg Fao consedng ous beste Re SSOATL, ‘Wave loads on existing breakwater and loading platform during construction 6/10 wave energy which means that the risk of any significant wave slamming on beam sides during construction is insignificantly small. ‘The retaining wall will be constructed towards the end of the construction pe- riod of LNG Berth 5 marine facilities (towards end of 2008). As such the wave heights at the berth will be based on the presence of the new main breakwater (long term condition), The 100-year wave height at the berth is therefore H, = 2.0m as per the Design Basis. Hose then becomes about 3.6m, This results in a maximum potential wave run-up height of 3.6m + 2.0 m (high water level) = 5.6m. The potential for water hitting the retaining wall is therefore extremely small and should it happen it wili not cause damage to the retaining wall. Asan extra precaution, the thickness of the bedding layer on the offshore side has been increased from 200 to 500 mm. A construction sequence should be adopted in order for this additional material to be placed as the retaining wall is installed. In conclusion, based on the reduction in the wave heights due to the outer brealcwater, itis recommended to raise the temporary profile to +4.1 mCD and place all of the antifer cubes prior to the construction of the LP deck, see up- dated Drawing in Figure 1.1 and Appendix B. 3 Protection of Breakwater Slope - Ad Bullet no. 2 ‘As outlined above during the two initial construction stages of the abutment, namely: when the antifer blocks are removed and the filter layer is exposed (du- tation: 1 month, period: May/Tune) © where all the antifer blocks are removed and a placement of quarry run up to elevation +0.0m CD has been completed (duration: 1 month) there is a potential risk of damage to the filter material of the existing brealowa- ter. ‘To assess the risk of damage to the filter layer, a design event should be deter- mined based on the following: ‘© The duration of the exposed filter layer to direct wave impact - 2 months © The period of construction which is set to start in May/June, The wave climate in this period in the Ras Laffan region is statistically catego- rized as mild in accordance with risk assessment study by Jan de Nul Dredging Ltd./Boskalis Westminister Middle East Ltd - Ras Laffan Joint Venture, ref.
